Laptop for my Dad

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

My Dad is looking for a laptop to just do basic run of the mill stuff, but I want it to last him at least 2-3 years. I don't know if that will be possible with his $400 budget tho. I used to be in the know with tech stuff but have since fallen out so I need some help. I found this but wanted to make sure that there isn't a better option. Thanks!

You need to define "Basic run of the mill stuff". Just browse the web? If so get a chromebook, they are idot proof and very durable if you pick the right unit. Or, if he needs some app functionality get him an iPad, also idiot proof and very rugged with a case.

Also, you picked the AMD version of the Pavilion 15 which is in no way other than price better than the Intel version.

On that budget, he will get more bang for his buck with a refurbished laptop. I personally daily drive an Acer Re-certified Nitro 5, which has not had any problems. Provided you are tech savvy, you could get a great deal. The downside is, the warranty is only 30 days.

Take a look at the site, but I would look for something with an i5 and a minimum of 8GB of RAM. https://acerrecertified.com/laptops/?sort=priceasc&_bc_fsnf=1&Processor+Type=Intel+Core+i5

Something like this might work, but I would suggest replacing the HDD with an SSD. https://acerrecertified.com/acer-aspire-15-6-intel-i5-7200u-2-5-ghz-8gb-ram-1-tb-hdd-windows-10-home/

Does he need windows? Because if not then he could use a chomebook if all he is going to use it for is web browsing... Chome os is really good with low spec devices too... However if not then look here. This seems like it would be good all around (however it doesn't have 8 gb of ram)  https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/asus-vivobook-e403na, but it seems like good value for the price. Also maybe check out the used market (after all a used laptop will likely outperform a new cheap one for the same price).
