I'm having a hard time with "removing the picture" from the quote too XD

Dear diary: Today was not tomorrow and not yesterday, which I think is nice...

//Overengineering example:

#include <iostream>
#include <string>

using namespace std;

int main()
{
  string s = "Hello World";
  for (int i = 0; i < s.length(); ++i)
  {
      cout << s[i];
  }
  return 0;
}

Well every PC I have has at least one 5.25" bay. Out of the 7 PCs I have only my secondary PC doesn't have a DVD drive since I don't have a spare SATA DVD drive and it doen't have IDE. My main PC even has a 3.5" bay which is used for the SSD (put it there due to PSU cables) and it does actually have a floppy drive as well (it's USB since there are no internal floppy connectors). My other 5 PCs all have both a CD or DVD drive and a floppy drive. While I rarely use them, I still like to have it ready to go when I need it. Actually the cases of my Main and Secondary PCs have built-in memory card reades and on my other PCs I don't need them anyway. Fan controllers I do not use (either the fan is controlled by the motherboard or it's just running at max speed). I don't need to add USB ports since I use 1 or max 2 at the same time. Would like to have an internals monitor for temps, etc. but my Main PC (where I'd put it) has only one 5.25" bay already occupied by a DVD drive.

Not only do I still have a 5 1/4 bay for a DVD/BD writer, but I have a 3.5" one containing a memory card reader.

It's getting really, really hard to find decent cases that have at the very least one 5 1/4 bay let alone two of them... and with an adapter panel for a 3.5" hole. 99% of every case these days is designed to barely hold anything and is full of shitty RGB.

System 1: Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro, Ryzen 5 2600X, 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz, Sapphire 5700XT, 250GB NVME WD Black, 2x Crucial MX5001TB, 2x Seagate 3TB, H115i AIO, Sharkoon BW9000 case with corsair ML fans, EVGA G2 Gold 650W Modular PSU, liteon bluray/dvd/rw.. NO RGB aside from MB and AIO pump. Triple 27" Monitor setup (1x 144hz, 2x 75hz, all freesync/freesync 2)

System 2: Asus M5 MB, AMD FX8350, 16GB DDR3, Sapphire RX580, 30TB of storage, 250GB SSD, Silverstone HTPC chassis, Corsair 550W Modular PSU, Noctua cooler, liteon bluray/dvd/rw, 4K HDR display (Samsung TV)

System 3 & 4: nVidia shield TV (2017 & 2019) Pro with extra 128GB samsung flash drives.

I am starting considering building a smaller PC with my Bluray Drive for my lounge and using the 5.25' drive bay for my all-in-one 5.25 module to keep my card reader and internals monitor. It looks like smaller cases tend to have more 5.25 drive bays.

now I just need to find a case with a single 5.25 bay that is no too ugly

I've not used a 5.25" bay for years, and even then I only ever used it for physical media like CD/DVD.

I switched to USB windows installing from Windows 7 onward, and with the decline in physical media plus my optical drive dying, I felt no need to replace it.

These days I have an external DVD drive for the odd old/retro game I want to install, or physical CD I buy and want to rip to mp3/flac.

I know my dad used to use a ZIP drive, tape drive, CD/DVD and a hotswap HDD caddy, not all at the same time mind you.

When I built him his last computer with a core2duo for xmas years ago, I reused his optical drive and nothing else because that was all he ever needed.

Silverstone do some lovely HTPC style cases with a drive bay or two... I know because I've got one. Granted they're a little pricey... but they are very nice... and not really that much more than a decent ATX case with a tempered glass panel these days.

I just have a Bluray drive, since it can read and write DVDs as well, I gave my DVD drive to my brother.

But if you had one, would you use it, that's one of the reasons for the second option "Maybe want to use, depends on what I can find"

I use one, but only because I need to burn CDs for old computers I mess around with. CDs are just obsolete now, and if I didn't love messing around with obsolete computers, then I'd have no use.

I've decided to ditch DVD unit that I didn't use anyway in favor of 3x 140mm intake fans. The cooling capacity increased so much I can run CPU cooler at much lower RPM, making whole system quieter despite 1x extra fan on intake.

Currently using a 5.25 bay for my Lamptron FC5v3.

The ROG front panel/base can also go there. It's pretty neat.

I use a kingwin hard drive switcher in my 5.25 bay. It switches the oiwer on/off hard drives. I originally planned on using it to switch operating systems between windows and linux, but now I just use it for normal storage and turning on my backup drives when I need them. It also reduces the noise from the drives as I can turn them off when I want to record audio.

At this point, I'd rather have a case without it, as it frees up internal space, and soon everything will be completely silent SSDs (thank the Gods)

I agree disk supports are now obsolete, but there are other things you can use that bay for.

Even if they are obsolete, I still use my drive to read the DVDs and Blurays I already have. As well as playing old games I bought a physical copy of.

well i dont think cases today absolutly need one.

i havent used any type of discs for years now maybe even a decade. and if i absolutly had to then a usb drive is perfectly fine as a one time thing.

that being said i do miss them. i mean i love the clean look in the front but i would love for some manufacturer to include 1 or 2 in the back somewhere.

the lian li pc-011 dynamic for example has 2 mounts for psu's but no bays? a simple adapter plate/modul could screw right into the place of one of the psu ports and offer t least 1 or 2 bay mounts.

i mainl like them for the hotswap drive cages. i got a 6x2.5" cage and think that a way better solution than any case mount for them. i went as far as to cut out a piece in the top to mount the cage. back would have been better but the space was taken. so now i just have to pop the top cover off and can easily hotswap a drve.

Only use I can think of for a 5.25" bay in my case is a water reservoir.

I'm pretty sure my purpose in life is to serve as a warning for others.

I don't have a 5.25" drive in my custom-built pc since I don't have any spares and don't really want to use money on it either, but my two pre-built ones both have a 5.25" SD-card reader and I find them really useful. I have to always save files through my laptop or one of my pre-builts if I want to transfer pictures from my phone or camera.

My stuff:

Spoiler

CPU :  Intel i5 8400 | GPU : MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB

RAM : 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 @ 3600MHz

Mouse : Logitech G502 HERO SE | Keyboard : Mountain Everest Max w/ Cherry MX Brown

Headset : Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro 250Ω w/ AT2020USB+

Monitor : Acer XF240H @  144Hz

i have a server chassis that still used a 5,25 drive bay, tough i removed all of them for extra radiator space for watercooling.

honestly i wouldn;t mind a case having these bays, tough the only thing i can see myself using it for is either modding or watercooling. i havn't even touched a optical drive in ages.
