Lighting question

Ok, so I'm going to be photographing layflat clothing, and I've narrowed my first lighting kit down to these two ghetto options. If what I want to do works out well, then I'll advance to some LED stuff.

These are the two kits I'm looking at. They're basically identical, however one uses a single 135w bulb, and the others use 4, 45w bulbs. The price difference is only $9.

Obviously one produces more light, but is there anything other than that I should consider? The fact that one has 4x as many bulbs, is that an issue in any way? I've never had to use soft boxes before.

 

I'm not overly worried about any kind of power consumption figures.

won't multiple bulbs lead to unbalanced lighting in each stand as they dim down differently over time?

Potentially, yes. It's why it's common practice in vehicles to change bulbs in pairs. Like if you have one taillight bulb go out, you replace both. Or a headlight burns out, you get two and replace both. I don't exactly know how that works in photography and filmography, but I would think the same basic principals apply here.

 

EDIT: Then again, LTT videos, for example, use far more than just one light or one softbox. So I would think as long as you're on top of things, you should be alright.

honestly the kits are fine,  On the dimming issue dont worry about it,  while it will happen because the fixtures are in reflective boxes with a defusion front you dont get 4 hard lights that come out of the light you get a general glow.

for the price if you are handy you could make your own led light kit for the same money by using strip LED's with a 95+ CRI rating there are a bunch of good videos on it.

But this depends on a number of factors which you haven't mentioned (camera, home-use pics or for publication, etc)

Ahhh yes that's a good point, I didn't think of that. I'm thinking of going with the single bulb kit though, easier to manage.

I don't think I'd have the patience to make my own lighting kit.

I think that'd be considerably more expensive though, no? You'd need timers, flashes, etc. Pretty much every person I've looked into uses softboxes.

 

It's just a Samsung NX20, probably to be replaced with some form of Canon (likely a T3i) down the road as they can be tethered to a PC easily with decent software support. It'll be used for eBay auctions.

It definitely would be. While I'm most people here would LOVE to have a full set of Profoto B1's and all the modifiers they can dream up, it's definitely not a starter kit.

 

You'll be just fine with these CFL kits. Later on, if you like working with continuous lighting rather than strobes (I do), take a look at Aputure. Their COB120d can take any bowens mount accessories and is easy to setup and use.
