Where are the 9900k price drops ?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

So Ryzen 3000 is a tough competitor and going the 3900x route over 9900k seems to be the better choice at the moment. I have been buying pieces here and there for a new build but have put off buying CPU and motherboard in anticipation for Ryzen 3000. I have long been an AMD fanboy but I was planning on going with the 9900k on this build "every PC I have built for myself has been an AMD machine". Ryzen 3000 destroys the 9900k in damn near everything other than single core performance and I find this disappointing despite the obvious successes on this launch. While the 9900k single core performance may only be a slight lead above Ryzen 3000 I still find myself wanting to the with the 9900k but, I am waiting to see the price drop for it to make more sense in buying one now. In my opinion Id like to see the 9900k drop to $400 or just below to be competitive. This being said, I do feel its probably a better choice to go with a 3900x x570 as AMDs claims of carrying AM4 until 2020 and with having PCIe 4.0 makes me feel a little better about the longevity of the build as I could probably still get another generation of CPUs to upgrade it.

When do you guys think we may see a drop in price on 9900k's ? Do you think we will see it at all?

There has already been a price drop on the i9 9900K, it originally was over $500 and now it's at $484.

The KF sku is $479.99 on the Egg,  Then again, I still don't understand why the world doesn't move near Microcenters *shrug*

Don't buy the 9900k. Take a 5% gaming performance hit to save yourself $150. The 3700x is so much better value and beats the 9900k by a whisker in the majority of non-gaming tasks. And it consumes literally half the power consumption in some tests. And not only that, you also get a free cooler with the 3700x as well. And you can pair it with a decent b450 board and be just fine. That's even more money saved. It's crazy to get a 9900k at this point.

There is no reason to get the 9900k other than to brag about a tiny gap in performance. 160fps is better than 150fps, but is it actually noticeable? Absolutely not.

If you want to brag about something that's worth bragging about, that's what the showpiece 3950x is there for.

Intel Price Drops

also NOTHING will come with the Ryzen 4000 to justify upgrading from a 3000, there is barely a reason to upgrade from 1000 to 3000 unless you just need more cores and price to performance 1000 CPU's are insane, you can get an R5 1600 for $80 at Microcenter.

Yeah, I dont worry about power consumption, this is a custom loop build so cooler doesnt matter to me either. I plan on going with the Asus formula motherboard....$480 ish for z390  $700 for x570....so the Ryzen build witll cost a little more.

You may want to rethink your rant to a guy that's buying a $700 motherboard :)

I do tend to agree with you on the crazy to buy it right now thing as well. probably better off going 9700k and upgrade when Ice-lake is finally a thing.

Then again the whole build is absurd....kind of the point.

I applaud you for being real and not trying to justify it all.  Sometimes we need to just rock out some absurdity.  Enjoy.

Well if it's all about aesthetics and showing off, may as well wait till September for the 3950x because that's the ultimate absurd bragging processor. And it's specially handpicked by AMD for the very best clock speeds so it'll overclock like a beast (At least we hope so anyways).

Yeah I dont see the need to watercool the VRMs even overclocking to 5ghz though, I will because its there. The Maximus Hero would be just as good for half the price. Its purely asthetics going into a PC-011 Dynamic.

Dont have the motherboard yet, debating on whether or not I want the Ryzen or the Intel.

If you want to ball out... that expensive Ryzen mobo (with a 3900x or 3950x)will probably take next years Ryzen 7+ 12/16 core. Saves some money, and you get to have a top tier CPU two generations in a row.

oh god. a maximus formula is the exact same. at least get an aorus extreme, it has a 14+2 70A vrm, and is completly passive (no chipset fan)
