Gigabyte X470 Ultra Gaming

I just bought the gigabyte X470 ultra gaming and a Ryzen 3700x. Would I be able to update the bios without a cpu? I couldn’t find the information anywhere. Also do I have to update each bios or can I just go for the latest one. And is there any thing else I would have to do before/after to make it compatible with 3rd gen Ryzen? This is my first pc build so I know very little about this stuff. Thanks!

Most boards require a compatible CPU to be installed in order to BIOS update, and if you do, you can use the latest version and skip the older ones. For your motherboard, I do believe that you need a CPU in order to flash the BIOS. When a new chipset is released, sometimes later on the chips BIOS's are upgraded but Ryzen 3000 is so new I doubt that this would have had happened. If you need an option to flash the bios, ask a friend if they have a 1st or 2nd generation Ryzen CPU or buy a compatible CPU, flash the bios then return it. (I have had friends do the second method). Also, I see you only have a CPU and motherboard yet it's your first build, do you still have the other components? Hope you can get your PC up and running!

I have the board. You need to run the ECWF update tool before flashing the latest BIOS in order for the board to be fully Ryzen 3000 compatible.

So, ECWF update first, then bios F40.

What is ECWF and do I update it the same way as bios?

ECFW has to be updated first, before F31 or F40.

As far as I've seen, ECFW is flashed from inside Windows.

I used my friends Ryzen 2000 cpu and updated everything in that order. Everything was fine. But when I swapped the Ryzen 3000 into the mobo it wouldn’t boot and had the dram led on. Also the power button wouldn’t turn it off. Any ideas how to fix it? To turn it off I had to switch off the psu and I don’t know if that was good or not. All of my fans spin and everything just doesn’t boot. I’m kind of freaking out right know because I don’t know how I f’ed up

Clear the CMOS / reset the bios. Try again.
