random sporadic cpu usage spikes all of a sudden?

Jstagzsr

so im assuming it had something to do with the fact that i may or may not have been pirate baying some games and programs the other day, But all of a sudden my cpu would randomly jump up to 100% and stay there for 1 to 30 seconds which obviously severely slows down my my.. I have revo uninstalled the games and programs and ive deleted the torrent data and the torrents, ive ran diskcleanup and defragged, ive done full scans and boot time scans for malware and viruses using avast and malwarebytes (nothing found). ive restarted a few times. ive went back through and revo uninstalled ALL unused programs. and still, out of the blue, my cpu usage will still jump up to 100% randomly when i do something simple like open firefox.. even webpages are taking like 5 seconds to load when it used to be instant.. Ive even un-overclocked my cpu and ram.. My C drive is still 1 third empty. all my other drives are not full either. and theyre all defragged. my recycling bin is empty.. my startup apps are limited to only essentials like always. My registry is clean. my everything is clean..nothing is overheated or overheating.. i dont understand whats going on..

any ideas? normal cpu usage is around 2-5%.. the OONNLLLYYYY time i have EVER seen 100% cpu usage was while running stress tests. never ever even on games let alone when opening forefox.. the only thing in my processes thats taking any large percent of cpu is "avast services" which is sometimes 80%.. i dont remember that ever being that high. right this second its fluctuating from .3% to 11.4%

Check for unwanted extensions in Firefox, or roll back Windows to a time before you pirated stuff, or wipe and start fresh

Yeah re-installation is a pain. Start with the roll back and extension check, see what happens. Report back.

ok. Also, open task manager and sort by CPU usage. WHen it spikes, you'll see what's causing the issue, that might give us a good direction to examine

i did. the highest cpu usage thing listed when its spiking is "avast service" and i noticed something called "runtime broker" too when i just glanced at it. never saw that one before.

The runtime broker is....*I think* part of Avast.

Clearly Avast is running on everything all the time, it may have been corrupted...

use a resource monitor like on task manager and see what exactly is using that 100%, take a snapshot of the screen and post it here.

ive been staring at the resource monitor for 2 days now trying to figure out wtf is going on.. its only ever avast that spikes up to crazy high usage.. normal its at less than one percent usage but it will spike up to osmetimes 80-90% cpu usage for no reason at all. extremely annoying.

you think i complete revo uninstall and a reinstall will fix it? or is avast just bugged now after an update or something?

hmm nothing too out of the ordinary there but why that avast is so high is strange, was it during a scan?

no, that was during normal avast idle. doing nothing intensive..

i ended up reformatting my pc to get rid of this and a few other problems and when i installed avast, a day later it started doing the exact same thing. so i revo uninstalled avast and reinstalled ONLY the basic protection it offers, none of the other extra stuff. and now it seems the problem is fixed. so it was one of the extra side programs avast has that was doing it..

pictured is the current cpu usage of avast service. how its supposed to be and always up until this random mishap.

nice! i was going to say avast is the problem at least something from it,but you diagnosed it already,so glad you found the culprit, sometimes this happens and its a nightmare to diagnose.

yeah agreed. i honestly thought it was a virus. i had folders in several drives where i, the owner and administrator, didnt have and could not grant myself the permissions to delete. that was fishy.. Then i had some random other things go wrong that felt virus esque. so thats actually why i reformatted. but after that when it did it again i realized it was avast itself doing it. And now that i think about it it makes sense, i had literally every single program avast runs installed and set to sporadically scan my pc for either malware, viruses, unused programs, broken registry items, system junk, etc.. and although they run in the background and it wouldnt even show when the specific program was running, it was clearly causing a serious issue. plus all those side programs all feel superficial to me. for instance when i had a brand new 5 minute old windows instal it was telling me i had programs slowing me down and it said i had like 186 broken registry items. lol. thats just not possible. either windows comes fresh out the box broken or avast was seeing something and misdiagnosing it.. so it was no big deal to get rid of them. Now im back to being stable and smooth and rarely see cpu usage past 50% unless im gaming or rendering or converting file formats of videos, etc. Perfectly normal use. im very happy. it took me months to build this pc and i definitely can not afford to replace it. If my pc dies there goes my job, and most of my free time.

cool glad everything is working fine now,on a side note i never run any type of antivirus other than what comes with windows and never ever had a virus "knock on wood" but i dont go to sketchy places or porn sites either so lol,and if you ever find a file you cant delete because you dont have rights i have a program that will take ownership of pretty much anything if you want it let me know ill give you the link for it,comes in handy sometimes when you uninstall something and an error happens or it uninstalls but theres shit still in the folder you cant delete, this fixes that lol

yeah that sounds great, ill definitely love to add that to my list of awesome useful software..

and the main reason i like having an antivirus is because once in a while ill torrent movies or music or programs and i feel its just better to be safe than sorry. It has helped me a handful of times in my life. Ive actually never used JUST the windows stock antivirus. ive always heard bad things about it. Like its not thorough enough in the real time protection department. Id be interested to see stats on it vs other av programs.

im about to hop ion the car. when i get back ill check this thread for that link. Thank you for that! ive ran into the not having permissions issue many times and its always irritating as hell!

yeah no problem,i used this proggy many times over great little program for sure, and yeah i do alot of torrents myself as im a cheap ass and pirate most of my games and programs lol,for that i do use an av but i only run the av for that purpose only,so say i download a game torrent, once its finished ill run my av and scan just that and be done, then turn the av off...

https://raymondcc.r.worldssl.net/Take_Ownership.zip

theres one for 32bit and 64bit in there, just unzip then double click one of the takeownership things, i installed both but i suppose you dont have to if you dont want, then it gives an option when you right click a file there will be a thing that says take ownership and thats about it,and if you want to uninstall it just do the same as when you install it,will give the option to uninstall also.

hahaha. yeah i do the same. torrent evertything. i cant remember the last time i paid for software.. well, besides online type games.. i bought destiny 2 forsaken, and Anthem, and stuff like that. but i did pirate the sims and titanfall 2 recently. and now the end result is an enormous like 500 gig movies folder, 200 gig music folder, etc. why wait to pay when i can get it free right now. Thats my motto! hahaha

and cool, im gonna download that "take_ownership" right now. thanks man. much appreciated!!
