Is a 4.5 MB image really necessary?

mariushm
Go to solution Solved by CPotter,

FIXED! Sorry, I'm a n00b.

It's not really a big deal for me but maybe it is for people with less bandwidth...

Do you really need to have a 4.5 MB png image for the mandrinas ad on the right, that's basically a 300x350 px banner.

Not to mention, does it have to be 5800 x 7000 pixels ?  Here's the same image 20 times smaller, 290x348 pixels , 85 KB :

Now a days everyone has a 10mbps at minimum in a butt fu&* town or city ya know.  That along with a fast system which pretty much everyone has;  just a i3 or i5 and what your saying shouldn't be bothersome imo.

Absolutely irrelevant for the medium.

It's a 300x350 internet banner, not a "for print" ad or something to insert into a video.

It's not like people won't buy coffee because they're clicking on banner and get pissed at pixelated mountains.

yeah, it IS irrelevant, but it is also harmless. Start multiplying that file size some, and your point will start to hold more weight, but as it is, it's just a little bit overkill, and just because there's no real reason NOT to have it that way

If bandwidth is an issue, you can always save some more by using an adblocker.   That way you don't have to see the picture at all.

But yeah, it is indeed kinda unnecessary to have a gazillion pixel image for a 300x350 banner.  It's an easy mistake to make though, perhaps they forgot to resize the picture before saving it and didn't notice that they put the big one in the site.

That's the downsize of modern sitebuilding tools.  Back in my sitebuilding days (when CRT and 1024x768 was still common) we still wrote the html for our websites in notepad, so you really knew you effed up when you inserted a gigantic image instead of the smaller one;

I use adblock, so I didn't even know there was a madrinas coffee ad on the site! I've been putting off trying Madrinas for some time now, and I will continue to put it off despite wanting to try it ?‍♂️

The image is served from

https://linustechtips.com/main/uploads/monthly_2019_05/LTT-Banner-Madrinas-01.png.a62e72bee7d5af276449e96bec2d0156.png

The structure of the URL is no different than any image uploads on the forum ... if you make a rule to disable those banners, you'd probably disable serving any content from /main/uploads/monthly_* so you'd basically get no images showing up.

This seems excessive. 1MB is understandable, but 4MB means I can only visit LTT 256 times when served this ad before having to pay another $10 GB on my phone.

Luckily the images are cached on your phone or computer. It depends on your phone browser for how long it's gonna keep the images in the cache (depends on the amount of flash memory of your phone and ram you have on your phone and various other settings in browser)

So the image may be loaded maybe once every few days or so, depending how often you access the site and it happens to load the page with that precise image.

You can also set mobile browsers to only load images on demand.

And yet, the majority of sites on the net supported by advertisements don't understand why we use adblockers... :(

But it's good to see they did the needful and already fixed the image. Thanks @CPotter!

I would assume that rather than coding out their own forum website and buying a domain, LTT Forums likely uses a popular Forum host to run this site. That host likely gives LMG the option to monetize by allowing adspace on the sidebars. So it's very likely that the optimization of the ad falls to what is allowed by the mothersite, and what the advertizer themselves do with the space provided them.

Likely has NOTHING to do with LMG.

Eh, wrong. LTT forums only uses pre-made software which is highly customized. Its hosted on somewhere in US, but not by any "forum host". Ads are only provided by LMG sponsors, nothing else. The spots where they are located are determined by forum design, the ad images etc. come from LMG sales team. These two do talk to each other, but only to say we don't want auto-play videos and whole page popups.

Which is why Colton repaired this one, and which is also why Mortis has repaired some Amazon ads in past.
