Mint Linux also removing 32-bit support

Linux Mint 20 will be the first version of Mint that will drop 32-bit support, says Clem Lefebvre, head of the Linux Mint project.

The news comes after Canonical maker of Ubuntu, who also said that they'll drop 32-bit support starting with version 19, only to later, due to backlash to partially remove it, and not update the 32-bit library anymore.

 

In Mint Linux blog, Clem Ledebvre says:

The announcement from Canonical that 32-bit support was to be dropped in Ubuntu 20.04 means that the future Linux Mint 20 will only be able to be released in 64-bit. Linux Mint 19.x is already available in 32-bit and it can be used until 2023. I think most people are happy with this and dropping 32-bit releases going forward makes sense in 2020.

It isn't clear if Min will do like Ubuntu and have partial 32-bit support for Steam and Wine. The blog suggest that door open, but it isn't clear.

Isn't it based on Ubuntu anyway, so would go hand in hand. Honestly say this year has been the absolute worst for new OS dropping support or breaking old apps. Although I'm only saying this because its finally the holidays for me and Blizzard won't install on Catalina >:(

I hope they do, that's the only way we'll ever truly get rid of all that legacy junk. There will always be third party or source based repositories out there for those who really need multilib but we need to send the message that developing with those libraries in mind is not acceptable any more.

I think it's likely they will, it doesn't cost them any extra effort to just provide the same packages Ubuntu does. This update is simply them saying that they have no intention of taking on the task of maintaining 32 bit libraries themselves.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Linux fanboys: Linux is awesome because you can modify it to suit your needs.

 

Also Linux fanboys: X distro sucks because we need to modify it to suit our needs.

Didn't Canonical just said that they will wait until 20.04 and finding a solution with Valve and the Wine project in the meantime?

Since Linux in general rely from Windows software support (which is still actively supporting 32bit) they won't be going anywhere

In my opinion is stupid thinking Linux distributions can dictate over developers and force them about deprecating or not 32 bit, their influence in the desktop is a joke especially for proprietary applications (and also because software development is separate from the distro one) and this will just make things worse and less suitable for normal desktop users, the best thing that can happen here is just a bunch of unusable programs, certainly not expecting developers to spend more time to port their libraries to 64bit, or if they would, that would take a lot of time and certainly waiting for a solution leaving users without the possibility to use their programs isn't a good idea (it's still a distribution responsibility even if you can obviously workaround the thing in other ways like compiling things by yourself, but I'm generally speaking to normal desktop users)

Maybe we should use /r for rhetorical. TBH Windows is obviously next, its now the only major OS not to do this move. Might not be for a year or two, but it's coming sooner rather than later.

I'd personally prefer Windows to do this first as it would have a bigger influence than linux distributions

The trouble is there would (and rightfully so) be an initial uproar from developers having to update really old software after 10 or so years. Software like in accounting etc might just not be updated, but still sold - so they would have to update them. IDK how much work goes into updating software to run for 64 bit, but I imagine It would take a while. 

 

But anyway, MacOS did it first, IDK why there was more coverage on Linux dropping support on LTT, when Catalina brought about many changes that have broken quite a few apps (albeit not released yet, and still in beta).

I can think of a few reasons
1) Apple is the owner of the major MacOS distribution, the GNU/Darwin flavours (MacOS kernel + GNU desktops like DarwinOS) out there are non-existent anymore, so unlike Canonical they got all the control in their operating system and more support from developers because of that
2) Much more wirespread in desktops so developers actually do care about software support
3) They announced this 1 year ago, unlike canonical which was initially a sudden decision... If things broke on MacOS anyway, on Linux it would have been a lot worse for desktop usability

For the vast majority of applications, basically a flag is added at compile time.

 

In reality, the people running out of date shit applications are very unlikely to be on the OS bleeding edge anyways. The people that will require time to update (and optimize) for 64 bit are in such niche fields (or video games...) that it really is being over stated.

 

Really, this is about video games, not grandma's calendar app or some business/government app.
