Honda "Urban" EV - nearly done, new info

well they had that second concept called "sports" i believe.

but i at least havent seen anything closer to production than the concept. but that may be a more longer range sporty car. personally i dont like the design as much though.

They did, but it's hard to say if it'd last longer... and coupes are fine, but many people need rear seats!

The previous design was actually something considerable for buying, the new one looks like a childs toy.

The both looks like toys tbh. The car looks way to hideous for me to consider tbh.

if it's more affordable and relatively the same quality as the Tesla 3 it'll probably do well.

I would disagree. It looks objectively worse than the model 3 and that is going to have a big impact on sales.

well if it ends up actually being 30k i dont think they are trying to compete with the model 3

So Honda is apparently 99.99% percent close to mass production with its "urban" EV or so it was called when it was still a concept.

Anyone remember this tiny muscular looking beast?

It's not competing in the same category as the Model 3.  This is for European urbanites who tend to gravitate toward small cars.  Go to a European city and you'll see loads of Fiat 500s, Minis, Smart Fortwos/Forfours and other compacts.  This is meant to go up against cars like the Renault Zoe where the Model 3 is aimed at the kind of person who'd otherwise buy an 'entry' BMW or Mercedes.

agreed the new peugeot 208-e also falls into that category and a bunch more. which is the exact thing i find sad. i would have rather seen them keep the original design and go against the golf gti, mercedes a class and other compact sporty cars like that.

ok granted if you look at dino graph most petrol cars take a long time to rev up to their max power so at low revs the eletric motot got the upper hand i guess but that doesnt help if they limit them to 140-150 km/h or something. i mean i dont know if they will on this one but it has been done in EVs because going faster uses exponentially more power which i get but still what good is all that torque if you can basically forget about overtaking cars at all on the highway.

Doesn't any Tesla fit your needs? I admit such speed limits would be annoying, but you could say the same about any city oriented car, small tank, not much power, good power steering. EV's weakness is over the highest speed limit in my country and something I would notice only when I go on a vacation, where the lack of charging stations is more of a problem.

If this is what cars in the future will look like then I don't want to live on this planet anymore. I really don't like the styling many companies have done with EV's. Even Tesla seems to miss with the styling of some of the models. I don't want to drive something that looks like it came out of Dr.Seuss's nightmare.

ok as with everyone critizing the style im gonna ask: what are you driving then? and what would you prefer they do for styling.

personally i agree somewhat in that oldtimers look way better to me than even current cars but with EV im just happy manufacturers are willing to do something fresh at all. they could also just keep the regular old design like they with the hybrid models. at least they are trying something new and yes they might miss with the design a couple of times but generally i think a bit of fresh wind isnt bad at all. for example i really like what peugeot did with their "legend" concept of the new 504. again just a concept and the end result might be as dissapointing as this one but if they dont change it too much thats on bad ass design. again combining old school with a bit of a futuristic look

Since you asked about styling.  I personally loved my 2000 ZX2, which both looked sporty and had a low drag design.  I regularly got 40mpg with it, and when I drove it like a bat out of hell it only went down to about 34.  It was tons of fun to drive even with a small motor, and I'd love to outfit one with a modern electric powertrain.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any in decent shape that aren't a rust bucket at a reasonable cost.  The one I had got passed on to somebody else, and they unfortunately never took care of it while I was away.

But, there are lots of cars that don't need stupid EV styling to work great as EVs.  The VW Bug for example would convert over perfectly too, as would most car companies small cars.  There's only a couple EVs on the market that can be used up this way though, as a fairly average commute range is 50-60 miles each direction, and only a couple of them handle the cold winters without having DRASTIC reductions in range.  There are even some SUV crossover type EV vehicles on the market that don't suck…but they won't offer them with awd/4wd like the fuel version of the chassis, and that would be a HUGE deal around here as well because of winter.

Kind of hope it does good enough to give incentive to other manufactures to potentially attempt more old school designs. Living in the U.S. I fucking hate the era of SUVs and Crossovers. I mean "some" crossovers aren't to bad, generally it's just a hatch lifted with some minor changed with no extra room but they can alow for more off-roading compared to the hatches. I mean look at the Impreza hatch vs. Crosstrek. I'm one of the biggest dudes in my family but I drive the smallest car so I welcome the attempt from Honda on this.

You are lucky. Mazdas are terrible rust buckets.

Either properly detail it or spend the $200 every 5-7 months to detail it typical before winter and around mid-spring and you'll be fine.

Or just don't buy a Mazda. Toyotas and Hondas rust much less and are more reliable.

I owned a 2016 Camaro SS and I have own many Jeep Grand Cherokees. I've owned volvos and subarus. I just have never been a fan of compact cars or crossover suv's. I would love to see a company make a EV competitor to the Camaro/Challenger/Mustang that is fun to drive and great to look at. I will never buy an EV if the only EV i can get is a compact car or a Tesla because I find Tesla's reliability to be questionable.

Why would you get this for more than 35k when a model 3 is much much better and in the same price range?!

No set pricing yet.

Why would you get a model 3 when you are looking at smaller EVs?

They are 2 very different cars.

It's like saying why buy a mansion when a 1 bedroom apartment is at the same price? Uhm...because it is better?

Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for small urban vehicles, but if they are priced in the model 3 category, and offer no advantage over it ...why would you buy it? Expect because it is smaller.

It is the same story with the Nissan Leaf which is around 40k euros here. Compared to the entry model 3, it has worse range, it is not as safe, has worse battery longevity (how many charge cycles you can have), it performs worse in winter, it doesn't have any auto pilot features etc... Sure, if it would be 20k, I'd understand... but otherwise... for me, it doesn't make sense.

People in large cities do exactly that.

Because its convenient.

Besides it could end up being 30k for the fully loaded modell.

That's actually a good example against what you're trying to argue!

Yes, it would normally be silly to get a one-bedroom apartment for the price of a mansion, but the similarly-priced mansion will probably be in the boonies where the apartment will probably be located in the best part of town.  If you're a hotshot executive or a politician, the apartment could be better precisely because you don't have to commute an hour.

And the size might actually be everything.  If you're living in the middle of a European city with tight streets and tighter parking spaces, a Honda E in a high-end trim could make more sense than a base Model 3.  The larger Tesla might not be much fun if it leaves you perpetually worried about hitting cars or leaves you parking a few blocks down to find a large-enough spot.

Yeah that is fair assessment. It does look alot like a mini cooper.

I don't see it. Paying more for a worse product. Yes, it's smaller, but if the highest end trim is worse than the lowest end trim of an M3 ... :/ ? If you'd live on an island in Greece... I'd understand, you barely fit with a scooter there...but otherwise...

You do have a good point with the house though and it seems my analogy was not the best :P
