Nothing will be broken, but performance might be an issue. The GPU will be pushed, but assuming adequate cooling, the card won't be damaged.

Hi,

I have recently got a 144hz monitor and a WQHD display, I have a nvidia gtx 960 2gb version, anyway what I want to know is can the monitor cause any issues on the computer / monitor such as straining the graphics card or monitor breaking?

I know this is a daft question but I want some advice

Thanks in advance

As @Lord Mirdalan stated you will stress the card a lot and as long as it has a good cooler it should be fine, but 2GB of Vram isn't a lot especially for 1440p. You should of probably gotten a 1440p 60hz display because the 960 will have a tough time getting anything above that depending on the games you play.

Main Desktop: Cpu - I9-9900k @5ghz | Mobo - Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E | Gpu - Asus ROG STRIX 2080ti OC Ram - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB 3200mhz | Aio - H100i Pro RGB | Psu - Evga 850 GQ | Case - Fractal Design Meshify C White | Storage - Samsung 970 Pro M.2 NVME SSD 1x 1TB 1x 512GB / 1x Seagate Ironwolf Pro 4TB HDD |

If you ask for a Mid Tower case recommend, I will 90% of the time recommend the Fractal Design Meshify C or S2.
