I really would like to see a Tech Demo to see if it can compete with other engines like SnowDrop,Cryengine,Frostbite 3, or Unreal Engine 4.
Why are they even making Source 2 when they could just use Unreal Engine 4 or Cryengine?

They are making their own engine so that they are much more familiar with it and can do whatever they want to do with it. Since they have a large arsenal of games then it would only make sense to create your own engine so that you can make sure that all of the games they make will work flawlessly with the engine since it will be perfectly optimized for those games. Also why not? It's Valve they have the money and the people to pull it off :) Nothing wrong about more beautifully looking game engines and also more competition for others is nice too!

pardon my ignorance/stupidity but will this update be free for L4D2 or will we have to buy another copy?

I can't remember how Valve handled CS:S and Half-Life:Source, but I believe both were freely available to people who bought the original version. L4D2 on Source 2.0 will probably be freely available if you have L4D2.

More people using Unreal Engine is the last thing I want.

Unreal Engine games tend to have a glossy chunky looking shaders that I hate. Their specular and normal mapping drives me nuts.
