Can you use the second PCIE x16 slot for a GPU

I have a Asus ROG Strix x370-f motherboard and was wondering if the second pcie x16 slot is fine to run a GPU in as my cooler currently seems to block the first PCIE x16 slot on the board

Yes, but if it's a Titan card or something super high end it might be slightly bottlenecked. The second slot only has half the lanes. That's not an issue for most cards, but it's why the first slot is preferred.

OK thanks I am planning to get a 2070 would I better off trying to get it in there? I'll add a picture in another post after this one.

Some motherboards will refuse to run anything on the second slot, unless there's something in the first slot.

Also, typically the first two pci-e x16 slots are "special" - if there's only one card in the first x16 slot then that card gets 16 lanes, all speed. If two cards are inserted, then each card gets x8 ... there's only 16 lanes shared between the two cards.

If you insert your video card only in the second slot, then the video card may run in x8 mode even if there's no video card in first slot. Or, the motherboard may refuse to run video this way, with nothing inserted in first slot.

The lane configuration should be in your motherboards manual. If the second slot is labeled 8x or 16x it should be fine. 8x will be a single digit percentage performance bottleneck with the highest end cards today but a 2070 will have no issue

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
