Opened. putting backups into a partition in the same drive that is being backed up is NOT a good idea (unless you have other backups on drives not in the computer). If the drive dies, it will take your backup with it.

The same is trues of backups put on other drives in the computer or even external drives kept connected to the computer. If something takes out the computer (such as a power surge, virus or other malware, theft, fire, pulling a Linus (dropping the computer), etc. your backup will also be history.

As long as anyone is oppressed, no one will be safe and free.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

Still closed = backup into partition was just to store files from the OS whilst I sold off my PC but keep all files. Temporary measure. Never intended for long term

Point taken. Still, since any drive can fail irrecoverably without warning at any time, you should have separate backups at all times, preferably one onsite and one offsite. For data to be reasonably safe, it needs to exist in at least three separate places.
