A friend presented me with his PC part picker list, I countered

Edit:

For the counter list:

Why go with overclockable hardware when the PC is for gaming? You could save some money by going non-OC.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

Oops my bad. My brain was like: "The left one is the counter" :D

I think the H370 is a little low-end for gaming.

Also why not a 9900 non-K?

Overclocking is better for gaming performance though, an i5 9600k in a Z370 or Z390 board would have some gains over the i7 8700 for a similar if not cheaper price

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

I feel overclocking is a bit out my his element (my friend), he put the 9900k there because its the fastest cpu but I also know hes burning money for that slight boost and will not manage his OC's best to make use of it fully.

Edit: if he feels he's upto it then I guess it'll revert to the 9900k

Yeh if he's not going to really OC more than .2 GHz then it's probably best to grab the i7

Get a decent board and the i7 8700K is at 5GHz with a BIOS setting, just like Memory and XMP.  Even if he's not all that savvy, it's a single setting and done.

But yea... may as well add the "wait for Zen 22342422dsfr23452", cuz the naming scheme is ass stupid.

do you have any suggestions? Its been a while since I went intel for anything so I have no idea what the B, H and Z board do now. It used to be, B for office/business/basic, H for the home PC and Z for the enthusiasts with unlocked chips. Now I'm not so sure

It's roughly like that still I think.

I personally wouldn't put a 2080Ti with a locked CPU of the previous gen.  The premium for the 2080Ti over the 2080 for example would be better utilized in going with an unlocked CPU and mobo for overclocking.  That's what I would do, for me.

Now if he's just a build it and leave it guy...  Then it may make sense. You know how he is, not us.

But I will say, if going with the 8700.. use the stock cooler.  The case will provide adequate airflow that the stock cooler is fine with that chip.

Also, that PSU isn't the best and way too much power.  Cut it down a bit and pick a better one off the Tier List.

Edit:  What monitor and resolution is he going with anyway?

Z370's are fine with 3200MHz at the very least, which is more than enough for the 8 or 9 gens.

Good point.

Still think the 2080Ti is overkill tho.

Lots of other places to enhance the PC experience than a few extra frames,  which he may not get if you limit the CPU.

All chipsets have some limit on memory frequency. Z370 boards tend to be > 3600, most are over 4000. H310, B360, Q370, and H370 chipsets supposedfly do not support memory overclocking or XMP. So memory speeds on those motherboards may be restricted.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I do agree, but since he's assuming a no overclock build and budgeting for 1900-2000, I went for the slightly higher core clocker for the extra capital.

I didn't realize the B550 was going to be later on! Good info.

You are only looking at a 100MHz difference though in boost clock speed (4.4GHz vs 4.5GHz) and if the 3700X ends up being around £100 less then it is a no brainer imo.
