Small home- router for gaming and streaming

Go to solution Solved by RickL,

Hi dude,

I have used the Asus RT66U for the last 4 years and its just died on me from overheating :( . I have found that I should have spent the extra money and gone for the 68U as that has the ability for AiMesh for future protection, something I now want due to a house move.

The Asus have never let me down otherwise and thus I will be going back to them. I have had other routers such as a TP link many years ago, I think it was the WDR 3600 back when 5 Ghz first came out. I found that router to be trash.

Summary: Go for the AC68U.

           Background
Okay, so i'm about to move into my own apartment for the first time And I really enjoy streaming to Twitch on the side while I game.
The place is not going to be big because it's only me so, what should I look for in a router?

                         Main question?
The internet plan we're looking at is 100/100 unless I need something better down the line?

I'm mainly looking to have the capabilities to stream at 6k bit rate if I want to later. I don't think I'd need more download though but we'll see if I can find a better deal.

                      My thoughts
What i've learned so far is that I should probably have a dual band router so I can use a 5ghz connection for my wireless headphones for my phone. My computer will be using ethernet connection and then I don't think there's many more devices being connected. I haven't bought a tv or much else yet. Might buy a nintendo switch at some point but I don't suppose that matters much?
Asus RT-N66U is what i've been looking at so far but I have no idea if there's some special I should be looking for in a router besides the dual band thing.

I know its not the question asked, but have you checked its definitely the router and not the PSU that has failed?  Its possible its outputting enough power to bring up the LEDs but not stable enough to boot properly.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

It's on, running, just. It is scolding to the touch and as soon as I ask anything heavy from it such as a file transfer or a few more clients, the thing dies. Upgraded the firmware etc too.

Seems fairly common for it to run hot, some suggestions that Merlin is more stable and possibly even runs cooler.

If you ever decide to trash it let me know, I'd love to have a play around and see if I can solve the problem.  I'd send you the postage.

Ive had issues with a router I flashed with DDWRT running hot. Simple solution. Laptop cooler plugged in to its USB port. The cooler solved the issues.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I'm probably getting the 68u then thank for the help. I also looked at a 2017 router but I don't remember the name
