New build won’t post

Sir_nolan

So I just built my boyfriend a pc last night, but it’s not posting. Running an i7 9700k, msi z370 gaming m5, gtx 1060

I was going to get an 8700k originally but I got a good deal on the 9700k after I purchased the mobo. I just thought I could update the bios for 9th gen but it won’t even post. It was giving me post code 18, I tried clearing the cmos and then I got code 00. So I’m not sure what to do from here.

Any help is appreciated.

Are you sure the BIOS on this Z370 M5 is updated?

I had a similar problem with a TUF B360 on a system i was building for a client just a few days ago, turned out the BIOS was outdated.

I don’t think it is, it won’t even get me to the bios. I’m not sure how I can update it though

That's pretty much a given sign that its going be related to the BIOS.

You'd have to get an older 8th gen CPU just so you could get to the BIOS to update it.

If you not afraid of doing it, you could check to see if your BIOS chip is socketed and order a brand new updated chip.

Its not likely to be socketed on MSI boards, its much more common in ASRock boards but perhaps you're lucky.

BIOS chips havent been a socketed item for a very long time.

OP, you can use the BIOS flashback option. This is taken directly from the motherboard manual, page 49 specifically.
