"Seven Year Old Handcuffed Over Lunch Money Dispute"

DudeWazap

I find this to be extremely amazing how something so little can be escalated so much for no apparent reason at all.

After they interrogated the 7 year old boy as well as not letting his mother see him they found out that he in fact was Innocent about stealing another kids lunch money.

The family of a 7-year-old New York boy is suing police and the city for $250 million, saying cops handcuffed and interrogated the boy for ten hours after a scuffle over lunch money at school.

 Source - http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/01/seven-year-old-handcuffed-over-lunch-money-dispute/

The mother is now suing both the New York police department as well as the school for this. And I completely agree with her.

What is your opinion on this?

Good on the mother, I would do the same not for money but for the acknowledgement of what happened. 250 MILLION is ridiculous, that's like okay lets use this unfortunate event and get rich. Meanwhile taxes go up in NY.   Maybe a few thousand dollars if the kid was actually held for 10 hours and interrogated/ not allowed contact with parents. It's definitely really wrong the police had to do this though and it's really disappointing that law enforcement that is suppose to protect people from "real" criminals are busy dealing with the threat of kids stealing lunch money.

There are just so much wrong with this entire story. And tomorrow there will be another mall or school or theatre shooting........

Dude Kids do what kids to, the fact they're escallating something so small is that they're overly protective of their child/childrens and really kids are naive still.

Ohh hand cuffed I thought it said hand cut I was like

b22.png

The part I don't understand is why did they handcuff him to a poll... I mean there are a bunch of cops there and he is only 7. Where is he going to run off to? Surely NYPD can outrun a 7 year old...

it's fair for the parents to be angry but...

250 MILLION DOLLARS?!?!?!?!?!

Are they f***ing kidding me? No reasonable jury would give them that much money.

True that is not good policeman work or whatever the fck you call it. May I suggest that they were incapable of keeping a 7 year old in custody with a parent or teacher perhaps through exploiting young children to be vigilante criminals or something

While I agree with being angry with the police for this and I think the officers should be held responsible, suing the PD and city is not going to solve any problems.

What the heck is a matter with Americans? $250 million!? I hate selfish people.

What's with American's and suing everyone (no offence to all USA Members on here)? $250,000,000 is away too much. Quite greedy in fact. I think for such an incident $5,000 - $10,000 would've been enough, but $250 million, you have to be kidding me. I say if you're going to demand that much cash then do something worthwhile with it like give away 75% of it to charity or something or to people who really need some financial help. That's exactly what I'd do.

wut?

That wouldn't really improve the system of how the law should work though. Sorry I was very against the sueing part of your post.

Yes this is an example of what not to do as it was a mistake not accidental but is a reminder or taking the law seriously not being reckless and stupid like these officers cuffing a young boy of the age of 7 to a post.

I agree that the mother should sue. With the kid only being 7 years old, it's a tad extreme for the mother not being able to see her kid.

I do believe the mother will win the case, and will most likely either settle outside of court for a large undisclosed sum, or will win a high amount.
The court system will award her a large sum because it has to send a very strong message to law enforcement.

Also, I believe the parent has the legal right to be there while the childs being questioned. Since that was denied, they were in the wrong.

Handcuffed, sure it was a poor choice of the officer but it also sends a strong message to the kid that what he did was wrong. I can see what he was trying to do psychologically there.

Whether she wins or not there shouldn't be no fee or sum of money payed. Children cannot be blamed for this as can be said with the officers but it wasn't right to cuff a child to a post. That is the mistake. a law suit is stupid and these people should focus on the bigger picture on the next chapter rather than reading a blurb.

Sarcasm is pretty hard to tell when writing, I'm serious about certain thing this being one of them but I'm open minded but this lawsuit isn't worth talking about no more, it's just upsetting me.

Sorry if I came off really aggresive against your opinion. I sometimes think the world revolves around me like in this video.

Then sit the kid in the principals office and have a bunch of adults stare and at him, he is 7 It doesn't take much to send a strong message. If they do settle I hope it is not for anywhere near 250 million. I doubt the settlement would ever make a difference inside the police department and what could send a strong message to police would be repercussions for the officer who handcuffed the boy.

It was to a post? Haha. Well that's just wrong. Technically a suspect shouldn't be cuffed to anything. I'm surprised the cuffs even stayed on, to be honest.

If they questioned the child without asking if they'd like a parent present, they childs Miranda rights were ignored. The police force deserves to be punished, or at the very least the officers involved.

You'd most likely see both take place. The police force would rather settle outside of court for an undisclosed sum.

It does make sense, as the police force will take strong action against its members to ensure it doesn't happen again.
