I have a old PC that I can use to make a Plex server but need to buy some parts.

So I was thinking of buying an old server instead.

I am looking for opinions and i am also looking for pros and cons of both.  (link below of a potential server i was looking at).

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R620-Server-2-00GHz-16-Cores-32GB-RAM-4-Trays-/192757366586?hash=item2ce13bff3a

The pc i have is a I7 2600k with 16BG of ram.

I run plex on a 4th gen i7 laptop. With 16 Gigs of ram. It works pretty well. It doesnt take much to run plex, other than storage for all your media.

You ever notice that many establishments have a sign that as "No Shirt, No Shoes, No service"? They never say anything about pants............ You know what that implies. You dont have to wear pants.

I have a case with a mother board ram cpu.  I need to get hard drives either way i go so they are a wash so i need a SSD, Power supply.   I was concerned that the CPU i have wouldn't hold up for multiple users. I have 3 kids with tablets 2 Play Stations and multiple PCs and Tvs with Plex so many opportunities for use.  Right now they don't use it much but in the future I feel it would get used quite a bit? I know i can run it on that PC i have just don't want to set it up then have to redo it over in the near future. Also i think there was an issue with the MB i had i was going to send it out to be checked out and if expensive just toss it and replace with new one but still need to contact manufacturer. thanks again for the help.

Your better off building around the hardware you have your passmark cpu score is 8186 that should be good for 4 or more trans-coded streams and many more if they are direct streams I have 2 Dell R series servers and they run much higher in terms of wattage and noise your cpu has a much lower TDP

I have an R620 myself (or did) and with dual 2690s it could handle something like 20 users+ at 1080p transcodes
