A little poll about dear old shiny discs.

I'm a bit old style and still use them, after all I have a TON of music, movies, games and software on those things and I certainly won't throw them away any time soon!

What do you say?

A little, mostly helping out dad with the software he needs to install from disks. Got him an external unit after his desktop killed two GPUs and the PSU started making a LOT of bad noise that were not fan related

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

All the time, i use it to watch normal and blu-ray movies aswell as using it to install old games. Heck it even used one to install Battlefield 4 as back then i only got 100gb a month (now i've got unlimited NBN, thank goodness!). The last time i used it was to benchmark half life 2 on an old pc and that was like 2 weeks ago.

Not on my PC, but as a fan of (older) consoles of all kinds I do use optical discs on those.. So kind of?

Yes. I use them to rip music from CDs (usually the best source of high quality music with the best meta data) and movies from DVDs and BDs (better quality with more extra features than downloads and usually costs less, especially when bought from a bargain table or used).

I just realised that I took the optical drives out of my PC years ago and all this time I've still had a shelf of PC Game discs sitting next to the PC the whole time. Eh, oh well I kind of need the shelf there as it is what my mic arm is mounted to.

I haven't bought a music CD in probably 15 years.

Well,

it seems the majority is still using ODDs one way or another. And being on a forum like this where most of its users are tech-savy, the result is even more significant.
I don't know about you but I'm yet to find a single techtuber who isn't thrashing optical media saying that "No one uses this anymore", like it was a given fact and RGB radiators and fans were more important than anything else...

Well, it seems it ISN'T a given fact, at least not yet! ?

I personally only use it once or twice every year or two years for some random thing that happens to come in a disk. My PC doesn't have an optical drive, so I use an external one that we have around the house. I do have some SATA optical drives in old Dells, but if I'd put one of those in my main computer it'd both look less sleek, and leave a hole in the salvaged one. External it is. :P

I have a USB 3.0 slimline external (which I managed to acquire in the most expensive way possible and I feel obligated to keep because of such) that hangs out on top of my main desktop (for ripping CDs mostly, because I like FLAC), a Blu Ray drive in my media center PC (for ripping Blu Rays occasionally), and a Blu Ray drive in my laptop (by default).

As I alluded to above, I like ripping my CDs and Blu Rays for use with Plex (and just to have copies, as some of my CDs are fairly rare).
