Your motherboard is a very very bad one sorry if that sounded hard.Buying an i7 or even an i5 with that motherboard is a bad desicion.

The very best would be a 7700K, or even 6700K (or the non-K variants).

The 7600(K) might be a good choice too if you don't need the extra 4 threads.

I wouldn't call that bad. Sure, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but functionally it's totally fine and certainly good enough for any 6th or 7th gen Intel Core CPU.

why would it be a bad desicion ik it would reduce performance but could i use this mb for  while while i save up for a better one

First of all, it's important to know which CPU you're currently running.

Depending on that it might be better to not buy a new CPU now, save for a little longer and then buy a new CPU and motherboard altogether.

You did not mention that it would be temporary and that you would change it for something better in the near future, if so sure go ahead.

For the cost of an i7-7700/k you're better off just reusing your ram and replacing your mobo/CPU with a Ryzen 5 1600 combo for like $150

As you wrote in ur latest answer. Its better to save up and get a better combo cpu and mobo.Buy the newest ones that would come out if price allows.I dont think an  i7 should be in this chipset as you loose much of the functions.

Sell the motherboard and buy a Ryzen 5 2600/b450 for $200-220

I think in that case your options are:

  • Buy a relatively cheap i5-6xxx or i5-7xxx, if you need a CPU now and you can't wait anymore.
  • Sell the motherboard and buy a current gen. Ryzen CPU and motherboard
  • Sell the motherboard and wait for the new Ryzen CPUs and motherboards to be launched in about a month.

@Plutosaurus Completely agree, it would be a waste of money to buy a good CPU for that outdated platform,  OP will just have to upgrade again sooner down the line if they get a 6th or 7th gen CPU. Why spend money on a dead chipset when you can get a more modern upgrade like a newer Ryzen CPU and not have to worry?

It wouldn't be so bad if Intel resale wasn't so high.....which is why I'll never buy an i5 ever again.

It's ridiculous even 5+ year old CPUs sell for crazy prices just because they're i5s or i7s. The motherboard prices are a huge thing too, originally $100 motherboards for those CPUs go for double sometimes even triple their price they sold for brand new. And a lot of people see that and think it's still worth it, but it is absolutely not especially with Ryzen around.
