Should I wait to upgrade to RX 5700 or upgrade to the VII now?

Right now I'm running an AMD Radeon R9 200 because the EVGA 1070ti I bought a while back didn't work with my board and I just gave up and returned it. I am considering upgrading to the VII but the RX 5700 is coming out soon. Should I bother upgrading now or waiting till the RX 5700 releases and just go in blind from there?

The board is a GIGABYTE X470 AORUS Gaming WIFI 7 and even doing a driver clean didn't work.

maybe just wrong with that particular card. No reason why R9 200 series work but not 1070ti.

What use case? Nvidia might do something soon to combat AMD's Navi release so I'd wait to see what they do.

The 5700 XT isnt any faster than the R7.

 

But i guess if you want to save some money, sure go ahead.

R7. We already know that Navi wont be replacing it, in other words not faster. However the cooler leaves much to be desired with its operating noise and lack of custom cards.

i'd go with the vii, if you buy the 5700 XT, you have to be fine with having a pc that's slower than a console within a year, and that's 450usd just on the card.

Guess I'm going to take a look at monitors as well since it still has a vga port. Or look at convertors to save money.

Wow... not one sensible and reasonable answer... just a load of AMD bashing.

But seeing as you specifically asked about the RVII vs R5700... I would wait a few weeks and see what real world performance is like on the new cards.

 

It's always better to be fully informed when making a purchase, and getting the best performance vs value for money is the key for most people... there will always be those who treat tech items as a fashion accessory and want what's perceived as the current 'cool' thing to own. Those people you can completely ignore.  :)

 

When you see the real world numbers and pricing, only then can you make an informed choice... and at the same time you can see what nvidia does to compete against  (potentially) faster cards are much lower prices. You may find that they slash a few prices for a few weeks to try and offset the release of navi based cards. But if the AMD numbers prove to be accurate, they're gonna have to drop them a little 'below' AMD prices to offer true value.

 

Over the next few weeks you'll see the 3rd party cards appearing with better cooling designs and so forth... Can't make a rational choice until you have all the info.

 

Just remember that with the RVII you are paying a premium for that 16GB of HBM memory... so unless you are a content creator it could be wasting money on something you are never going to really see the benefit off.

Navi is never meant to be the best. AMD already mentioned that the R7 will remain on sale and the RX 5700 XT is only compared to 2070, not 2080 as the R7 was and still is

If you need the vram and 4k fps go with the R7, if you can wait, wait for reviews. If you cant Get a vega64 nitro, they are cheap and with a nice oc they will be at 2070 lvl.

 

rx5700 XT still is a few days away.

If it's dying and you cant afford to have down time, get the R7. Navi will be hard to buy for at least a week after hitting retail

Yeah I just ordered the R7 and it'll come in by tomorrow. Hopefully I won't need to run a DDU but I'll do it just in case.

Whenever you replace a GPU you should DDU, it's super simple so I don't see how it could be a hassle to anyone. Might want to be cautious too if a 1070ti didn't work the RVII might not either it could be an issue other than the GPU. Have you tested any other cards?

Haven't gotten a chance to test any other cards but I'm pretty sure the issue isn't in the board itself. I'll do a DDU before I install the new gpu once I get it tomorrow.
