Can Ryzen and X570 Godlike do 4-way Nvidia GPU (SLI+1+1)?

Hello, I am trying to figure out of the X570 Godlike and the Ryzen chips in general can do 4 way Nvidia GPUs. I do not want a discussion on getting Threadripper or HEDT. I want to do an SLI setting with 2 additional GPUs. So the SLI setup will already require 8+8. I know that Ryzen can handle 3 GPUs doing SLI + 3rd GPU. I want to know if Ryzen can handle SLI + 3rd + 4th GPU. Thank you very much.

You probably can, but the 4th GPU would be running off the chipset, and I have no clue how much performance would be lost or if it will be compatible and stable

Problem with the Godlike is that there's no extra PCIe power connector on the board, in other words powering more than 2 graphics cards is asking for the 24pin to burn out.

but there arent any new GPUs you can run in 4 way. 

 

 

not even mentioning the awful scaling of SLI and issues that follow and the few games that work with 2 GPUs, let alone 4.

are there even enough lanes for that?

nvidia gpus need a minimum of 4 per card minus all your pcie storage

It needs 8 per card to run SLI, no limit for just running a card.

Unless if you are willing to game with SLI in AFR mode or play older DX/opengl games I would not bother with 4 cards, unless if its for folding or something like that.

After the second card the benefit to rather small with modern APIs, 2 cards is fine and Nvidia does a good job keeping up with SLI profile for games for 2 cards. So most games would be fine with 2 cards. Even then you can use the nvidia driver inspector and add sli support for a game 99% of the time.

It's fine that the 4th GPU runs off the 2.0 Chipset. I've seen a 1080 Ti comparison on 3.0 and 2.0 I'm sure you can find the image somewhere but 2.0 x4 was about 92% performance. I just want more performance.

I had another thread last year asking about 3 GPUs and was confirmed to work using 8 CPU + 8 CPU + 4 PCH. Are you saying that it can run 8 CPU, 8 CPU, 4 CPU, and 4 PCH?

I believe I stated this in my original post. I want SLI + 1 + 1. Where I stated the SLI would need 8 + 8 and the 3rd and 4th would not.

This is the point of my thread. I'm super confused about Ryzen PCIe lanes. I even created another thread about PCIe lanes yesterday and it added more confusion.

To clarify, maybe I was not clear. I want to do 2 way SLI + 3rd + 4th GPU. 3rd and 4th GPU are NOT in SLI. Plus this is not for gaming. I just want to know if Ryzen has enough lanes to support this.

Another worry is if this will fry the motherboard as there are no Molex or 6 pin power to give additional power to the GPUs. These will all be 280W TDP GPUs

I'm assuming that you can do 8 CPU + 8 CPU + 8 CPU + whatever the Chipset offers on the 4th slot, based on how previous Godlike motherboards were wired

but it's worth to note that the the Chipset PCIE lanes are different, they introduce latency and the whole Chipset is connected through x4 Lanes from the CPU I believe, and the Chipset drives almost everything from USB, SATA, M.2, Ethernet etc, so there might be compatibility issues as it's not designed to run GPU's, do some research on that matter, i'm not sure if it's possible for the GPU to function correctly on the Chipset

Possibly yes.. 75*4 = 300W, that's a lot for the 24Pin to handle as there's only two 12V wires to drive all that, basically like a 4Pin

that's the problem you should worry about. Gigabyte X570 Xtreme has PCIe 6pin for that, not the Godlike

it sort of does but not really. your best bet would be threadripper

I saw that in the Engineering Sample for the X570 Aorus Xtreme. However, when I looked at the product page I did not see it.

This is not a statement but a question: each GPU has 2x8 pins which supply 150W of power each for a total of 300W + 75W from the MB. The GPU doesn't reach 300W from my Google Searches of reviews showing: idle, stress, and gaming benchmarks of power consumption. So shouldn't the 2x 8 pins be able to handle all of that power and the MB shouldn't even need to supply power?

After reading some more, it's to my knowledge that current Ryzen has 32 lanes.

24 CPU Lanes and 8 PCH Lanes.

16 (8+8) CPU dedicated to Graphics.

4 CPU dedicated to M.2 (but is it really dedicated or is just 4 free lanes, but AMD expects you to use an M.2?)

4 CPU dedicated to connect the SOC to Chipset (which means you lose these 4 lanes?)

4 PCH dedicated to Wi-Fi card and USBs.

4 PCH lanes free.

------So to conclude, you technically only have 16 (8+8) CPU lanes for graphics and an extra 4 PCH lanes?

 

From reading about X570 it is stating 40 lanes total. Which means an extra 8 lanes for X570 MBs. This is not confirmed though.

You have no power to control the card's power balancing, neither do they care about loading the PCIe slot last.

PCH lanes part are wrong. Everything in the rear I/O, SATA ports, extra M.2 (other than the one directly to the CPU) are connected to the PCH's 40 lane budget. PCH is just a hub, it takes 4 lanes from the CPU and connects to all sort of stuff, though max bandwidth is still limited by the x4 connection to the CPU.

That really depends on the motherboard and how it's wired, as i stated before, previous Godlike motherboards had the first 3 Slots connected to the CPU, for example Z370 Godlike which only has 16 CPU lanes can do 8 + 4 + 4, so with Ryzen 3000 having 24, i assume it will do 8 + 8 + 8, but I don't have any confirmation

It's probably 4 PCH, not sure, depends on the motherboard again, and I have no clue how it's configured, if the M.2 uses 4 CPU PCIE lanes, then i assume the board will do 8 + 8 + 4 for the first 3 PCIE slots instead, or it will be shared with a PCIE slot, and the M.2 will be disabled when you use that PCIE slot and vice versa

yes, but those are not taken from the 24 PCIE lanes so you don't lose anything, but the bandwidth is limited to x4 Gen4, even though the PCH has 40 lanes

the 4th PCIE slot will most likely support x16 or x8 from the PCH, but again, bandwidth is limited to x4, but it won't be the full x4 bandwidth because there's other data that the PCH is sending to the CPU from everything connected to the PCH, and there's latency which *can* be problematic for GPU's

as Jurrunio stated, you can't control the balance, but you can check online for your particular GPU how many watts it's pulling from the PCIE slot



Also it's very possible that all the PCIE slots are connected to the CPU by having an 8 + 8 + 4 + 4 configuration, we really don't have enough info, it's better to wait for the board to actually release
