who would need 3950x over 3900x? realistically

3950X is most likely my next CPU, unless AMD shocks us with a TR3 announcement before years' end.

I've been on X58 for 9 years now. It's time for a meaningful CPU and platform upgrade, one that will last another 7-9 years with only changing GPUs.

i have 0 interest in the 12 core at all, hell if the 8 core zen 2 somehow loses the battle with a 9900k with both cpu at max oc then i'd argue the 16 core would be the only way to go. 16core for a workstation without getting some crazy motherboard is something that wasn't possible before.

LOL the same here. Just i been on x58 for 10 years now and i can say for sure i have cramp every bit out of X58, that is possible. So yeah its time to move on now and also that upgrade sickness is really beginning to nag me. But man it has been a good long and funny ride with X58. So manny good memory's.

Yep, we're on the same page there. I think we've both NVMe'd, 1080ti'd, USB3'd our X58s to keep them relevant this long, but their sunset is here.

While I would prefer a TR3 for GPU VMs and because of how useful excess PCIe lanes have been to keeping X58 relevant, the X570 looks to be a hell of a futureproof-ish value.

Yes. Nvme, 1080 ti, usb 3.0, 6 core cpu oc to 4.4 ghz in my case. Every last bit to keep it going. And what hell of a fun ride is has been, x58 surpriced me so many times like how a powerful gpu it cut handle, nvme ssd and the speed it gives, for how long i cut run games maxed out and still maintain 60 fps+ and so on. But year x58 has finally reach is prime time. 2019 i finally got games that really gave X58 a knock out and made me deside its time to move on. Metro exodus and far cry new dawn is the culprits that gave x58 the last dance for me.

Ryzen 9 3950X with its 16 cores shut keep me going for a very long time. Mostly the most demanding i do is gaming. So i dont need threadripper and more cores. And yeah x570 seems like a nice chipsæt with pci gen 4, just sad that most boards with X570 chipsæt needs active cooling, but that is really also the only negative i can think of. All throw if any thing, it had been nice if this 16 core beast had support for quad-channel memory.

4 more cores for 100 bucks

Kind of like that bulk pack of hamburger buns you bought at coscto to save $5.....except half of them went moldy because they didn't get eaten.

Computers aren't a value purchase.  Common sense tells you to buy the MOST computer you can safely afford, but to avoid buying anything right before new tier hardware comes out, unless there is a fire sale on the older gen gear.  So if you have the money to buy a 3950X and a 3900X, why would you or anyone choose the 3900X when they can afford the 3950X?  Buy the most you can afford.

Buyer's remorse is always when they go value basement and buy low or mid tier, then wind up unhappy because they don't have something they could have had.

No, I'm not telling you guys to buy the 3950.  Read my post again.  i said buy as much as you can afford safely.  That's the right way to buy hardware.

(of course do your research, wait for reviews, and do NOT buy buggy, defective or hardware prone to catch fire and burn down your city block (Alienware 51m, I'm looking at you).

i do music video editing and animation and i dont see why i should spend 800€ on the cpu

Animation and video editing? That's kind of cute. Not sure you'd even need the 3900.

We run 30h+ multi-threaded FX simulations and renders on a daily basis, so yeah... I'll grab that 3950x while waiting for the next Threadrippers thank you very much ?

Never used a SSD. You dont know what you have missed then. Do your self a favor and get a ssd with the new system.

I been on ssd for games and os for like since 2011. And i am never going back to a hdd for this.

  • 1 month later...

IDK, I want one, the clocks on the 3900X can't compete with the 9900k and I was already looking at the $750 9820x, plus I wont have any issues with anything muti threaded ever lol. I'm hopping it can clock at least 2 cores up to it's boost.
