10Gb a Standard

When does everyone think that 10Gb Ethernet should be a standard on all motherboards and modems/routers, i mean back when i migrated from dial-up to adsl 10/100 was normal now 10/100/1000 is normal and adsl+ hasn't been much better but with fiber coming to Australia and some people already have it eventually 10Gb Ethernet will be a normally everyday standard anyone out there have any thoughts to this?

Yeah it seems pretty normal for internet speeds to go up as time moves forward.

So much hassle for just 100Mbps? That is awful.

If only they start to offer gigabit CVC pricing which isn't crazy.

I miss my previous flat... 250/85 Mbps for $ 20, unlimited because EU :P:D

Honestly my interest and use case for 10GbE is more along the lines 10GbE NAS - that ASUS 2x 10GbE + 8 1GbE - My 10GbE PC + rest of the household on 1GbE and lower.

Ain’t getting much there is it.

even with the NBN networks the speeds are shitty and expensive.

3 x 100/40 @ $99 a month each so $297 a month / 7 users = around $43 a month and mainly only 2 people including myself use the speed heavily

Nice, the max here is 200/20. I hate this asymmetric BS most IPS's have going on. Not to mention CGN :S .

When 1Gbit/s Internet connection become common. Before that there isn't much point in investing in it honestly.

Because a large amount of 10Gb networking is fiber with SFP's, it will be a while. The complexity of fiber has diminished over the last 5 years but it is still beyond most normal users. Until it is more user friendly it will not be as widely adopted in consumer homes. Even copper based 10Gb ethernet is dependent on the type of Cat cable you are using. For the foreseeable future it will remain prosumer or SOHO.

The latest ethernet standard allows 2.5 gbps on cat5e,  5gbps and 10g on cat 6 for short distances (less than around 50 meters). Highest end ones have 10g cards.

A lot of the newest AM4 boards support 2.5gbps through new ethernet chips and some higher ones support 5gbps through aquantia chips

Also, some come with new wi-fi cards that can do 2.4gbps (probably combined)

So it's good there's some advancement, that new standard is not ignored. Now all we need is switches and modems that support new ethernet standard.

10g is not so easy  because of power required to transmit data over 100 meters, that consumes power, at least a few watts.. the SFP+ cards using fiber use way less power.
