Better CPU or better GPU?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

I'm looking for a new laptop to game a bit and also do 3d modeling, sculpting, and rendering stuff. I'm considering 2 that are basically the same except for the gpu and cpu. The slightly cheaper option has a Ryzen 7 R7-3750h and gtx 1660 ti and the other that's $100 more has an i7 8750h and gtx 1060.

Is the better cpu worth a bit of a worse gpu?

Also if you have better laptop suggestions feel free to drop them

Depends on the application used, but Asus TUF laptops? I'd pass on those on Intel, not sure if they still have problems on AMD @GeneXiS_X

I personally would grab the 3750H for modelling, because GPUs are faster at modelling than CPUs (as long as your program supports it and allows you to control which GPU you are using), and the FX505 has a faster GPU, and the 3750H has Vega 8 graphics which is about ~70% faster than Intel's HD 630 graphics, which means that if you configured your laptop correctly you could have the 1660 ti rendering while you have a much better time modelling or gaming on the Vega 8 graphics, or you could be rendering on the Vega 8 graphics while gaming on your 1660 ti with minimum performance impact. (honestly at the moment I am considering grabbing the FX505 for the same purpose)

Can barely handle the heat of R7+1660TI/2060. i7+1060 is even hotter. Not to mention the very cheap build material together with Asus inconsistent QC (especially in lower end models like FX)

Buying laptop isn't just specs. Are you from US? Budget? Any preference on weight and battery life?

Yeah from the US and I was hoping to spend $1,000-$1,300. Just need something to use during summers while I don't have my desktop. Decent battery life is always nice but I'll usually be close to an outlet so not a huge worry. And something on the lighter side would be nice so it's easier to take places but I'm not worried about trying to find some really light slim laptop.
