Building my Teenage Dream PC - Ricer PC Part 1

AlexTheGreatish

I have all of the drivers for that PC you are building and a ton of games for the time with codes like Balders Gate and Neverwinter Nights etc. I also have the DangerDen socket 478B Prescott CPU cooler for that CPU as well. If you are interested in the software and parts let me know where I can upload for you and where to send the parts. I am new to the forums so I am not sure if its posted somewhere. I also have the ATI All-Inwonder 9800 Pro 8x agp to give some Team Red Benchmarks against that GT6800.

Also serious overclockers of the P4C800E-DLX were required to mod the motherboard.

Look into doing the VDROOP mod.  ^.^

Far Cry, Half Life 2 and Doom 3 - those were the best games from that period IMO and stuff that I still enjoy firing up. I particularly enjoyed turning on dev mode in Far Cry (not something you could do on the steam version). No-CD hacks were also a common thing back then - raise your hand if you had Alcohol 52% ?

If you really want the old school + bad ass look I'd hunt down an Abit BP6 with a pair of Celerons in it. Assuming it ran right with NT you could slap a 6800 in there and game away happily.

But even that setup is still not as old as my Windows 95 box that had a Pentium 200 MMX and a Tseng Labs ET6000 in it. Not exactly a gaming power house but I did get a lot done with it and even added a burner and tape drive. There was definitely something to be said as well for firing up a game in DOS mode and having all the resources allocated directly to your game without the OS bloating the experience.

if you said imho i would have been oke .... no i'm just saying to you no

Nexus the Jupiter incident released in the same time.. as did Rome Total War I'm not going even near mentioning Dawn of War ( who remembers that scene where your space marines are charged by a huge stegosaurus? )   or Rise of Nations or Fable II ... KOTOR ... Vampires??!! star wolves!!!!
( sighs )

what a year

I wish the waterblock wasn't epoxied to the NB of my P4C board...anyone know how to remove AS thermal epoxy safely? I've heard freezing it super cold will make it become brittle and snap off without damage to the die or board. I'm curious how a Hyper 212 would cool a P4 3.4E lol, for research purposes of course.

As long as you can get it clamped down tight enough, just fine.  It's only like 100W of pure heat.  Heat pipes in cpu heatsinks (at least for the unwashed masses) was a new thing.

If the next video doesn't have W/C then it should at least have a proper Thermalright XP-120, and if they want to go for the best air cooler made, the Alpha 8952.  Which is still available for sale according to the website. https://www.alphanovatech.com/en/cat_p478.html

I remember my friend whom I bought my Koolance system from first used that air cooler on a P4 Northwood system in a Lian Li case, that wasn't good enough so he want to water cooling with Koolance. The water blocks for his Rambus RAM weren't made properly and shorted the RAM and fried the board so he went with less expensive Granite Bay based board and DDR memory, which in the long term ended up working out better because DDR400 was not only cheaper, ran cooler, but also ended up being just as fast in actual use. I bought the system from him, killed the Granite Bay board with the NB water block came off somehow, bought the Asus P4C board and upgraded it to a Prescott 3.4E cheaply from eBay. I used that system for a long time too, still have all the parts, recently took it all to bits to see if I can re-use the water cooling on a more modern system and the short answer is yes but the long answer is no.

Okay real talk.

You were saying that the always online DRM is going to prevent you from running your old Windows XP games, how about you try this setup in Linux and see if you can get the games to run in proton on this setup? (Long shot, but it could be an option to revive your old games).

The 6800 is supported in the 304.xxxx drivers which are still hosted on Nvidia's site and has a release date from September 2017.

You might have to do some serious downgrading to Xorg or the Kernel since it's pretty old, or you might be able to grab a distro from near that time, but I think this should work in theory.

Need game CDs to run on it? I've got two or three boxes of my game CDs from that era that my wife has been asking me to get rid of. What can I say, I hate throwing things away.

Not sure it will line up with what you guys were running at the time, but should be a pretty broad cross section of stuff. Good chunk of sims in there too.

And yes, I do have a CD copy of Need For Speed 5...

Still more of an update than normal so there's hope to be had yet!

Ya'll need to check out the OG water cooling from places like Koolance and I think there was a German company that made parts back in the day too. It was all super niche stuff and a lot of it was DIY unless you had baller money.

The almighty algorithim just reserved me this video, but it didn't serve me part 2.  I went searching and discovered it hasn't been made yet.  It's been over a year.  The video has over 2.2 million views which isn't terrible. If the project was abandoned, I think a post here on this thread explaining why would be nice.

It's still happening, just things like construction, a casual pandemic and more time sensitive projects have come up.  Given how things look right now I wouldn't be hopeful for seeing it before October, November.
