LTT Summer Folding Sprint to 10th

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Everyone if you are wanting to talk about all things folding I'd suggest you go over to the folding community board found in the link below.

@leadeater with the event now being over can you lock this thread?

What GPU's are you using? My r9 290's have normal PPD with these but my Pascal cards get a pretty brutal PPD cut

GTX 1080TI FE's

I haven't been running them in a few weeks because summer.  But last time I had them spooled up I was only getting 2.3 - 2.6M.  Now I'm getting 2.9.  I've never seen it that high.

What PPD are you getting per 290?

about 220K per card. that's bone-stock settings though, no OC or nothing.

Both do very close to the same? I have this odd thing where the 1st GPU does about 40k less than the 2nd. 290X though, stock ish as in +50% power target but no OC.

both actually do exactly the same on the estimated PPD somehow. that's pretty interesting!

how's the cooling on both your cards?

right now sadly not doing 220K though. i wonder why it dropped?

EK blocks, both 42C. The difference really annoys me, OCD lol.

Did you buy both cards at the same time? Same firmware?  My 1080ti's run differently but I'm pretty sure it's temperature related.  One of my cards runs 5c hotter than the other and subsequently runs 30 MHz slower.  I'm guessing this is because it's an eighth of an inch away from my CPU cooler but I've never swapped them to be sure.

Yep both Asus cards based on ref design, got them pretty much as soon as 290X were released.

That's very odd.  Must be variances in the chip fab?  I'd think they'd be pretty close to the same.

Is the 1st one also use to do display duties? Maybe that is eating into the cycles.

Been getting lots of 11733 WU's lately. somehow these drop my PPD pretty bad :/

Can confirm. I went from 1.1M PPD on a 1080 to 950K on that WU. I haven’t checked for AMD cards, but it does really cut pascal performance.

Hmm... Mine's still super low. When you click on the project, it says it has no description/does not exist, which is odd. Can you see the description?

I would think you should be beating my 1080ti's with a Titan.  I'm showing 1.5M on the same WU.

Just checked out the JANK 2.0, and it turns out that that 11733 WU is causing the R9 290 to produce ~ 70% more points than the regular ones. Very interesting.

lol nope, it's the 2016 Titan. most 1080Ti cards beat this thing sadly.

I'm doing a bit better then I was expecting. If only my Vega 56 was willing to play nice with folding I'd be a bit higher up the chart.

Vega 56s should do OK folding, about 750,000PPD according to the OC Database so about the same as a 1660Ti on team Green.

@Ben Quigley used to run a Vega Folding before it melted.

Yeah, I assume as much too. I've just got a weird issue where it keeps returning bad results in a short period of time leading it to doing nothing in the end and eventually just ending up in a fail state. I suspect it might have something to do with my motherboard but I don't have much desire to test that at the moment. I mostly only use it for gaming and when that's all I'm doing it works fine.

Usually you get that when you have 3 bad states in a row failing a WU and if that happens for a few times in a row the the server flags the hardware as bad.

Normally reducing or removing any overclock will fix it

Yeah, there were bad states. I never overclocked the card in the first place but I switched between the three profiles for the card (Power saver, default and turbo) and they all did the same thing. I set my RAM and CPU to default in case that had something to do with it too but that didn't help either. The last thing I tried, which I've never done with other GPUs before, was update the bios. None of these things made a difference.

I might pull apart my folding machine a bit later and see if a different motherboard will make the difference. Just need to get some alcohol to give me the enthusiasm to do so first.

So I've moved my Vega 56 to the old motherboard that I use for folding and it seems to be working fine for folding on it. Now I have my old RX 480 in my gaming rig instead at least for the moment and it seems to be folding fine too where the Vega 56 did not. Although the current estimated PPD for the RX 480 is a lot lower than it was in my folding machine but I'll give it some time to see if that changes.

I was already planning on changing the motherboard in my gaming rig to allow for better overclocking in the future so when I have some spare money, that'll happen and hopefully it'll fixing my weird Vega 56 folding problem at the same time.
