According to passmark which doesn't mean much, the i3 2100 should be faster

But I'd probably just save the $30 anyways and use it on an old business machine running an i5 or i7 2000, can be had for $100 or less on ebay

Sandy Bridge also has the benefit of DDR3, working 775 boards that support DDR3 are rare and expensive.

OEM boards can be finicky, I'm not in a habit of recommending them.

You are correct, though.

Remind me someday to tell you about the battle royale I fought with eBay last week over a guy who bought an Optiplex board from me, attempted to make a gaming system with it, fried it because he didn't bother to look up all the things that make Optiplex boards proprietary then tried to make it my problem.

Ordinarily, yes, but if you get your hands on a 460, 560, 1050 or 1050 Ti (hell, even a 750 Ti) low profile variant for a good enough price, an Optiplex 7010 SFF suddenly becomes a really good idea.

Yes, by far.

Alone the fact that it runs more modern games makes it worth it.

GPU is another story, same as PSU. Both need to be looked into.
