Black & Gold

richie30

Hi.

Welcome to my build log and some small mods of my cougar qbx.

I liked the look of this case since seeing it for sale on overclockers.

While i was in undesisive mode it went oos so a used one on ebay was finally brought when it came up.

Colour scheme is going to be black and gold. I was concidering white and gold and may go that route in a future build.

My intention is to use this as a daily rig, silence and storage is a must. my aim is the new zen cpu and board.

Parts: not set in stone.

X570 motherboard

Ryzen 3000 cpu possibly apu

16gb ddr4 3200+

Rx 570 itx

Corsair sf 450W

Cougar qbx

Noctua nf-12×15 pwm fans

Noctua 92mm and 80mm

Corsair h100i

Asetek 92mm aio

Nzxt kraken

Ill update this thread regulary but its going to be a slow and steady race.

Hope the pic gives you an idea of whats to come.

Yea its a corsair h100i.

Fits fine in the bottom on the first set of fan mounts.. it doesnt support radiators as standard there as the spacing is to wide.

There were 2 screws that stick through holding the case feet.. i just removed them. There still supported at either end.

The plan hopefully is to have a itx size gpu. The fan on that will help pull air in on the radiator aswell as 1 fan towards the hozes..

I tested with my 780 and was suprised it would work.

Just need to work on the 3.5 drive mount. 1 larger drive should be enough.

So you basically want to heat up the GPU with hot air from the radiator? Letting the GPU to suck fresh air to cool the rad and become hot air and then go to your GPU cooler?

Hopefully the GPU won't go full throttle all the time.. But I think it's worth the try, just to find out how's the output.

Did you test with the 780 running or just tested it to see that it fits?

I guess when its said like that it does sound stupid and might be a bad idea but worth a shot.. ill look at a cheapo gpu 1st to see what happens

There will be a front 80mm fan that will blow air towards the card that i could mod for 92mm however that would limit my hdd placement.

There would also be a 120mm fan on the radiator to aid cooling.

I do have a bequiet silent loop from amazon a while ago for 30 quid. My initial thought was to buy a 92mm rad and put it in the back.

I only did a test fit of the 780. It has the corsair aio bracket on so was similar thickness to a 2 slot card.. tbh i wasnt expecting it to fit was more curiosity.

Update to come shortly for drive placement

While thinking of ways to install a 3.5 and thicker 2.5 inch drives my partner was messing with an old hdd and the psu bracket..

I dont know if i would have noticed this ingenious location and mounting method or if i would have been chopping and drilling away at this aluminum angle bar making a bracket for the front.

My only drawback to this location is 2.5' drive only.

Tell me what you think

Is that the Corsair SF Gold with after market ATX bracket? I have the platinum version and the included ATX bracket doesn't have holes on it.

Anyway, the idea of mounting a storeage drive on it is briliant! I never thought about this trick.. This gives me an idea to mount my 2.5" or 3.5" HDD on the QBX PSU mounting frame.

Still getting used to the fourum and im on my phone hope you see this.

Yea is a sf 450w. I brought a silverstone sfx to atx bracket as i got this refurbished and it didnt come with one.

You will struggle with 3.5" drive as there just slightly to thick ( well the 500gb wd green was). If you do manage to fit one on the back cage cut the lip support for atx psu and mount it so cables are there just next to psu.

In the chopin i used a seagate 4tb portable and took the drive out.. there about 15mm thick. Might use same here and save me some hassle

Going to get some foam pads to stop any vibrations between hdd and psu.

Sat measuring up for a window last night with my pencil and ruler and ordered a 2mm thick sheet.

So close to being a4 (apart from the corners) 297x190.

I have an acryluc cutter and small coping saw so the corners should take 10 mins.. ill have pics when it arrives

Small update:

Acrylic turned up yesterday while i was at work.. postman nearly ruined it.. look like a dog had been shredding the wrapping.

Anyway i should have brought more than 1 piece as i ruined it cutting the corners. Scored using my acrylic cutter while viced down.. cut it straight, snapped it off and it cracked the window.

Ive asked around if someone will cut it for me. if not ill just buy an oversized peice and lay it ontop to make it easier.

Got some paint, painters tape and double sided tape to stick them together and make it look nice.

What would be your opinion

Im sure it will look nice, but I wonder if it will hurt the cooling performance by how much.. Keep it up!

Build going a little slow. Im waiting on x570 and a couple of bits and pieces.

However after breaking 2 pieces of acrylic i had the acrylic supplier do all the cuts..

For measuring with a ruler and pencil it fits like a glove ?

Just need to prep to paint the edges to cover the inner frame

For my first attempt im happy with it. However i will fix it in the future

There is a couple of marks from where i was cutting the tape with my scapel. Thought they would blend in when painted.

Learned more for next time :)

Its not 100% perfect but for my first time painting and modding pc parts and with limited supplies this is the aio in all its gold glory.

Im unsure if to paint the mesh on the rear and the pump top.

Waiting on the coolermaster 24pin angled connector to come and that will be painted also

I got sun burn sunday. Blistered but healing.. wasnt out in the sun long that will teach me.

Anyway ram cpu and mboard and ssd is undecided.

Im holding out to see what x570 brings but i dont know if new ram will be out at the same time if atall.

I was looking at the dominator plats and painting the bars.

If anyone has any suggestions let me know please.

As for gpu ive seen a rx570 with a broken fan for sale.. since ill be either running it passive or modded it isnt a issue. Im just waiting on my cheeky offer to be accepted :)

Amazons just made their delivery and ive gone to install on the radiator in the hopes of using my chopin motherboard cpu and ram to test thermals ect.

I however hit a snag.. i ordered hex head screws 5mm 18mm and 30mm

The 18mm ones work putting the top fans in but the radiator needs 22mm ones due to the recessed screw mounts.

Leds should also come this week to be rewired.

Some bad and good news...

I broke my side window again dropping it and ordered wrong screws for the radiator twice.

Ive got some new ones on order but since i was doing an amazon order last night i got some stand ins and painted the heads gold15612096076337859942790917554320.thumb.jpg.dea84871e307c45532a4aa991296b258.jpg

I also got a 24pin angle connector

1561209361516151464850778541465.thumb.jpg.cd9510320c11cd2041d5c9d708efae2b.jpg

I found a piece of .3mm acrylic from a project years ago.. since i have the old window cracked but intact im going to try and use it as a good template.

One thing that will be better is that it sits flush with the side panel
