Dangerous power supplies

I have recently seen a budget 750w power supply for £20 made by a company called ACE and was about to buy it until I read on another thread that it is just a ticking timebomb and blows up unexpectedly. Has anybody had any negative experiences with that power supply and got recommendations for a safer one thats still cheap ?

Yeah that looks like a bomb.

 

What are you trying to power with the power supply? The Corsair cx450 /cx450m should probably be more than enough.

dont skimp on the PSU. There's only a few OEMs that make the actualy power delivery parts, make sure to pick based on that or the reviews like johnny guru. 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

If you require 750w power supply, you can afford to spend more than 20 pounds on a PSU.

What system are you using it for? Chances are you don't need a 750w PSU.

it's not like the fire hazard can sustain anywhere near 750w anyway

It’s crap.

 

 

I’d like to refer you too this list, get one from tier B or above. 

 

And you probably won’t need a 750w psu... (don’t know your build, but considering you are looking at £20 psu’s.. 450-550w will do plenty.)

Yeah. Only 37A on the 12v rail. Has a single P4 connector and single 6-pin PCIe connector, so thankfully you can't really plug anything in to it that could draw 750w anyway. Judging by its ATX 1.3 specification I'm guessing it's at least 15 years old.

I'm pretty sure the "ACE" brand name is a spelling mistake...

Currently using FM2 mobo with 4 hdds no gpus. Going to get Xeon x58 with 5hdds and radeon rx570

If you want 5 HDDs then the ACE unit, among other problems, doesn't have enough SATA power connectors.

 

Absolutely cheapest unit to get:

Be Quiet System Power 9 400w - 37 Pounds

 

Better:

Corsair CX550 - 50 pounds

Be Quiet Pure Power 11 400w - 53 pounds

Yes... Among other issues, that PSU only has 2 SATA power connectors and no PCIe connector that is required by the RX570 graphics card.
Anything around the 20 pound mark is going to be absolute garbage and should be avoided!

Then forget about it. 25 pounds is not enough to buy a new PSU.

What is your current PSU? It's probably better than the ones you are looking at (can't be any worse!)

@Spotty PSU does not have to be new. Current PSU is unbranded 300w. Cant find any used PSU for £25

Maybe some Delta or FSP units taken out from prebuilt machines from Dell or HP? Storage drives are more sensitive to quality of power supply than other stuff, if you dont want to lose your data a good unit is necessary.
