2K or 4K and what size?

celerystruct

Hello I live in the US and I was thinking of buying a new monitor either now or later in the year like on Black Friday depending on the Answers I get here.

My budget is around $500.

I was initially looking into getting a 2k monitor but was thinking if maybe I should get a 4k monitor instead.

When I was searching around I saw that many 2k monitors easily hit 144hz for a reasonable price while 4k monitors seemed to be many times more expensive if it had anything higher than 60hz.

My question is if i buy a 4k 60hz monitor, can I still hit 144hz or 120hz if I lower the resolution of my games to 2k?

Also what is a good screen size for such resolutions? I currently have a 24 inch 1080p 144hz monitor and the size is pretty good to me but I'm tempted to go 27 or 32 inches with a higher resolution monitor.

My pc specs are as follow:

cpu: Ryzen 2700x

gpu: Rx 590

Any 27inch FreeSync display of 1440p144hz resolution will be the best experience for you money and current GPU.

If you can find an IPS panel you're golden.

Since we are on this topic I wanna add on to this. What would be good second monitor choice with a 1070

Already using a 1080p 144hz gsync ips screen but I'm not sure if I wanna go 1080p again or 1440p or maybe even just single ultra wide screen...

For your setup I wouldn’t recommend 4K. 1440p is a nice middle ground between 1080 and 1440, but I don’t think the Rx 590 will give a great experience on a 1440p panel. But if you are going to upgrade the gpu in a year I would go with a 1440p monitor.

here is a great 1080p monitor:

if u can afford a 2080ti together with a 4k screen,  go 4k, if u cant afford the ti, go 1080p or 1440p

however there are some tvs that can do 100/120hz on 1080p mode while beeing a 4k panel

however thats out of ur budget

If you already have a 1080p 144hz monitor, you could keep it as a "gaming monitor", and then for everthing else, like watching movies or video/photo editing you could get a 4k 60hz monitor. somenthing at 27-32inches maybe. something like the lg uk650-w?

It's not nice taking over someone else's thread, you should start you own being perfectly frank but either ways:

For a GTX 1070 I would consider something like the LG 29UM68-P which is a 29inches 2560x1080p75hz IPS display, ultrawides are really to have but 2560x1080p only looks good on 29inches.

75hz might not be 144hz but you still have FreeSync and with a display like this you're usually going for full eye candies rather than competitive high refresh rate gaming.

a 2560x1440p monitor is alright for an alternative, I wouldn't stress so much about refresh rate and focus on image quality here because if you need the 144hz for CS:GO and what not you can just use your current screen.

Speaking of GPUs would a Radeon VII be good for 4k gaming? How does the 2080 and GTX 1080 ti stack up? Also curious about the 4k TVs doing 100+hz can you explain it a little more? I may save up for a 4k tv instead for Black Friday to play on if that's the case.

First thing to consider is what setting you want to play at. If you want to play at lowest setting I think your gpu can handle 4k but that is a no go in my opinion because the whole point of 4k gaming is getting sharp and high quality images.

And this is a thing for 1440p gaming too, your gpu at best can handle 60-75 fps in 1440p so if you dont lower the resolution you wont be able to enjoy high refresh rate gaming.

If you want a higher resolution gaming I recommend buying a 1440p 60hz if you don't plan to upgrade your gpu later, but you can buy a 1440p monitor with 144hz for a cheap price and save the rest of your money to buy a rx 3080 or 3070 or a rtx 2070 and enjoy the high refresh rate with them.

I found two 27 inch FreeSync 1440p 144hz monitor in my local store via their website. One is flat and is IPS and the other is a curved screen and VA both have 4ms response time. Is one better than the other? From my understanding IPS is better than VA in terms of color or something but is there really a big difference? Also is a curved monitor worth it at 27 inches or should I aim more towards flat screens?

4ms response time

This is GTG and only measures the time it takes each pixel to go from white to black (all the color spectrum), it does not have any influence what so ever on real response time/input lag and anything below 5ms already is sufficient to avoid the only issue known of high GTG which is ghosting effect.

In my humble opinion curved only works for either big TVs or ultrawide monitors.

This is accurate, IPS has better colors and accuracy, however VA is not completely helpless as it does have better/darker blacks going for it, IPS only flaw is known as "IPS Glow" even full blacks you have a bit of extra bright on it that can be annoying.

Don't spend more than you need to. You've got an RX 590, so 1440p 144hz is unreasonable (At least in gaming anyways). Stay with 1080p 144hz because the 590 can do that still in all of the lesser demanding stuff.

Honestly..I'd stick with what you've got and get a gpu upgrade later. Maybe wait to see what Navi brings, as that should be unveiled partly in a few days time. The rumored $399 Navi card would be perfect for you.

Oh speaking gpus I wanted to ask on here as well. Will new gpus be announced along with new Ryzen cpus next Monday? Also when will new AMD gpus be released?

If I'm going to upgrade my gpu should I go for Radeon Vii, Rtx 2080, or Gtx 1080 ti? My understanding is that 2080 and 1080ti are about the same with 1080 ti outperforming in some cases.

supposed to be announced may 27th, but they are likely gonna be more mid-range cards, between rtx 2060 and slightly abouve rtx 2070. Release expected in Q3 2019. and high end may be announced q3.

RX590 can deliver a good gaming experience on a 1440p monitor, you just need to tweak some settings...like medium shadow quality, FXAA instead of MSAA (which BTW FXAA on a 27'' 1440p monitor looks actually quite good and not blury it's not like using it on a 1080p monitor where it blurs everything out from my experience) and you'll be good to go.

For GPU upgrade, if you can find a good deal locally on a GTX 1080ti it's a good choice IMHO. Radeon 7 is crap and GTX 2080 if you can afford it.
