Fujifilm launches 102-megapixel mirrorless camera (GFX100)

Really curious how much detail this camera will be able to portrait, I'm blown away by my own Nikon D5300 whenever I use it, and that's only 24.1MP.

Denis would probably love getting his hands on this.

Looks like any pro level cameras, or lesser ones with a battery grip trying to imitate same. It'll serve a niche.

100MP * 16 bit = 200MB (uncompressed), assuming this is a Bayer pattern or similar sensor it doesn't output RGB at every pixel. It'll probably be lossless compressed so even smaller.

100MP * 16 bit = 200MB (uncompressed), assuming this is a Bayer pattern or similar sensor it doesn't output RGB at every pixel. It'll probably be lossless compressed so even smaller.

This is a medium form factor camera, so the sensor size is massive compared to a regular full frame camera, with a price tag to boot. Even the lenses are expensive (not that's there's many to begin with) because the lenses are much bigger than a normal camera lens of the same focal length.

 

These types of cameras are highly specialized, and are really meant for very large print work, where the large print size would magnify any imperfections caused by grain or noise.

Looks like a good leap for the world of medium-format digital photography, but it’ll ultimately serve a niche (Fujifilm knows that). 

 

Regardless, would love to give this a go at some point. Those ultra high-resolution stills ought to look good considering that the sensor itself is massive.

I haven't looked up the exact sensor size, but based on indirect comments it is only a little bigger than full frame. Similarly I haven't looked up existing "medium format" offerings to compare.

I consider the advantages of medium format in two areas: physical and artificial limitations. Physically, if you go through the calculations for strict equivalence with actually available lenses, the optical differences over full frame are generally marginal and only manifest in some edge cases, if the photographer chooses to operate in that region. So we get to artificial limitations that if one simply wants a higher pixel count, the only reason we don't get it at smaller sensor sizes is manufacturers wont make it. If you took a compact camera sensor, but built it up to only APC-S you'd already be into 100+ MP.

The Fujifilm camera has a sensor size of 43.8 x 32.9mm, and is 1.7x bigger than a traditional 35mm camera sensor.

That's on area, assuming same aspect ratio that would put the crop factor around 0.77x.

As someone who has used the GFX 50R, that's not all that surprising. 

 

The amount of detail you can extract out of a shot is splendid.

It may look awkward, but that grip on the side is life saver. Having a firm and secure grip is first step towards good photos, especially if you have to move around a lot during photoshooting or use awkward angles as a photographer. Stuff it's far more awkward to do with a flat thin device like smartphone...

At first I was reminded of the Sony Mavicas, and other early digital cameras that used Floppy Disks, and other similar mediums.

 

But apparently some people like the more squarish shape, vs the shorter rectangular shape you usually see on DSLRs

It's "normal" on so called pro level DSLRs so kinda makes sense to follow that on anything else intended to be used in a similar way. The integrated 2nd grip can make it easier to work in portrait orientation. e.g.
