Quiet cooler capable of taming OC'ds i5-3570

Zat0ichi

I'm running an OC'd i5 3570k so i need a capable cooler ASAP  because my current AIO is going to die soon.

toying with the idea of AIO that I can transplant to my planned r5 2600 upgrade in the autumn.

Or i get a budget option now.

The current wisdom is the best cooling per £ is air so here I am asking for recomendations.

can I get a good one for £30?

Noctua seem to be the pricey option.

Cryorig M9 Plus

Better than Hyper 212,

(pure rock slim is trash, so is MA410p)

Cryorig M9i is only a couple degress worse, and 22 pounds.

There are plenty of Hyper 212's and they generally outperform the M9 Plus. You can see examples here with the 212x and 212 Black Edition:

https://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cases_cooling/cpu_air_cooler_mega_test/39

https://www.eteknix.com/cryorig-m9-plus-cooler-review/5/

Why do you recommend the M9i when you call the similar PR Slim trash? The M9i also doesn't support AM4 for the planned upgrade. https://youtu.be/-JyY2akopSc

What's so bad about the MA410P?

@Zat0ichi

What case and ram are you using? What cooler are you using and why do you think it's going to die soon?

Ram is Corsair dominator ddr3

Why do I think its dying?

My idle temps have been creeping up and the occasional gurgle is now a regular gurgle. (Weekly)

It's also 5 or 6 years old. Corsair h50

Hyper 212 in general has bad mounting hardware, M9 plus with have AMD, you can also buy the AM4 thing for the M9i, its like 2-3$.

MA410p is wayy too expensive for what it brings, IIRC its like 35-45$, which is Scythe Mugen 5/Fuma/Cryorig H5/Deepcool neptwin territory, and those are U14s competitiors.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/CRYORIG/M9i/6.html

https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/7426/cryorig-m9i-cpu-cooler-review/index6.html

https://play3r.net/reviews/cooling/cryorig-m9i-cpu-cooler-review/5/

(in the play3r review it beats the D15S, thats an outlier)

https://thinkcomputers.org/cryorig-m9i-cpu-cooler-review/4/

i'm sure I can find more.

The M9 plus allows you to run your fans at 70% the speed of the M9i and have the same temps, thus it has lower noise.

PR slim is almost 20c worse than a cryorig H7, which the m9i is ~3-5c behind

https://www.kitguru.net/components/cooling/dominic-moass/be-quiet-pure-rock-slim-cooler-review/5/

https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/be_quiet_pure_rock_slim_cpu_cooler_review,7.html

sees it 10-15c worse than U9s, which is close to M9i

Also, the M9 Plus looks arguebly better than regular Hyper 212 and 212X, 212 black ed. is more expensive, also is a lot smaller, and IMO has been much better quality, (i.e. better stock paste, much much better mounting mech (I've had to wipe blood of a build with a hyper 212) (the M9 mounting is litterally just push a backplate in, attach the posts, and screw in the cooler, can do easily 1 person. Also, fits in a lot more cases (125mm vs 160mm IIRC), so if he decides to go for smaller build in the future, the M9 plus.

oh, and not to mention the hyper212X is a hyper 212 with a  faster fan, and therefore lounder than the Hyper 212, which is louder than the M9i, not to mention the m9 plus.

The M9 is also 25% cheaper (6 pounds) than hyper 212 black, and 15% cheaper than hyper 212.

You should replace your thermal paste.  That 2012 CPU on an OC is likely turned that old TIM into crusty toothpaste.  As for gurgles, you can eliminate those when you are repasting.

Plug the AIO into a header, hold the block/pump below the radiator level, shake it all over the place, rotate it, etc (keep the radiator non hose end Higher than everything else) this will push all the air into the deep end of the radiator to be trapped.  My Corsair H100i GTX sometimes gets a bubble trapped, I tip the case around a few times gurgle goes away for months.  Eventually the bubble creeps in I guess so I do it all over again.

The M9 is also 25% cheaper (6 pounds) than hyper 212 black, and 15% cheaper than hyper 212.

The older Hyper 212 mounting hardware might not be the easiest to install but it isn't extremely difficult and a pretty efficient design for manufacturer. It's pretty easy to install imo but I'd say ease of installation has more to do with familiarity. The newer Black Editions have different mounting hardware that's pretty similar to that of the M9.

The product itself doesn't change with pricing but pricing varies depending on the time and region. The MA410P is alright and might not be a bad choice if the price was lowered. On PCPartpicker.uk, the MA410P is currently £32 whereas most of the coolers mentioned are over £50.

Where did you get the info that the M9 Plus with fans at 70% rpm matches the M9i?

'20c worse' can't be easily translated to a different setup especially when there's variance in performance.

The difference in degrees means different things in different tests. A 1c drop can represent the same performance difference as a 20c+ drop if the loads are different. As the load is increased and the coolers get closer to their limits, the temperature difference increases between them until one fails to cool and the system shuts down. They can't be compared between different tests in that a 3-5c drop wouldn't stay a 3-5 drop with a different setup.

The M9i is closer to the PR Slim in performance than the NH-U9S. The M9i and PR Slim trade blows with each other and rarely entry-level 120mm's whereas the NH-U9S is a true contender to 120mm's in that it more consistently beats the entry level 120mm's.

Looks are subjective but I'd agree the M9 Plus looks better than the Hyper 212 / X but not as good as the 212 BE. I'm not sure what the difference between the pastes are but neither have horrible paste that degrades immediately. Besides, there isn't much need to isolate thermal paste performance from the out-of-box performance.

You keep referring to just the 'Hyper 212'. I don't suppose you're referring to the... original model that's been long discontinued? There are at least 9 different Hyper 212 models.

The model that came before the Hyper 212X was the 212 Evo and they're both rated at 2000rpm. There are EU versions of both at lower rpm though.

If you haven't replaced your thermal paste since then, it might be time to -- what @Tristerin said.

If the noise is bothering you and isn't going away, a Lucifer K2 would be pretty good: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/LzNypg/deepcool-cpu-cooler-luciferk2

@Tristerin

I've replaced TIM and also delidded and reset the heat shield. (Grizzly LM)

That had a HUGE impact. Dropped 20C under prime stressing.

Looking at that YT vid it looks like I could just service it without cutting the hoses.

Pop the plate off and scrub the fins. Flush and replace the coolant. (Auto anti freeze? Really?)

Idle temps being warm is not a bother if load temps are 75 ish. But right now both idle and load temps are creeping up.

I use either 50/50 Prestone Prediluted Antifreeze with Cor-Guard OR 66% distilled battery water (can also be bought at parts store) and balance pure antifreeze with cor-guard.

100% really.

Heres the 50/50 pre-mix running in my old loop (running right now, because its mixed metals loop just like AIOs are) I flushed my 66%/33% and noticed no difference in temps using 50/50 premix

I would recommend 66% battery distilled balance radiator fluid (do a mix in a larger bottle and add so its proportionally mixed in AIO) only because its more water which transfers heat better than radiator fluid.  Or go for ease and buy the cheaper, $8-10 premix like whats running in the below

(that's my 2012 for fun loop build, i5 3470 R7 260X gpu, runs my living room entertainment, this loop cost me around $65 total, fans were the most expensive parts...China ftw lol)
