Precisely, what I mean is that there should at least be an option for a quad-core in such an expensive laptop anyway. There isn't one, and that's not because of technological reasons

It's not my job to convince you, you clearly had a pre-existing opinion and you had no intention on reconsidering it ;) I think every sensible person reading through this conversation will draw their own conclusions. For me the fact that the Surface Pro is smaller, thinner and lighter and yet manages to keep a quad-core i7 reasonably cool is enough to determine that the reason behind MacBook Air not even having an option to be configured with a quad-core is not purely technological because it's clearly possible. And it should be, especially at that ridiculous price.

This was an example from the top of my head, if you want an example that does have a clam shell, same size as the Macbook Air, is quite a bit lighter and still manages to have a quad-core i5 inside then there you go: LG Gram 13.

Pretty sure the 8-core is just there to sic customers onto the cheaper quad-core options. People tend to work their way downwards from the "best" option.

No - it's called progress. As a techie yourself you should kind of know that :P

The marketing department saw an opportunity to make more money by selling a superior product. There is no market for a quad core in the Air, because it is a different use case. People do buy the Pro line for performance.

Yeah, precisely. They could improve the design and that's a fact. I'm not saying the MacBook Air has to offer a quad-core with the current design, I'm saying that the design could be improved to allow for a quad-core option and I provided proof that other manufacturers have done it successfully.

I agree that you could argue that it's due to business reasons, however, he argues it's due to a technological reason which is outright wrong. Though I still don't think that in this year and time when we're starting to see 8-cores in notebooks, having a quad-core option would hurt anyone. I'm sure there's a market for that as well, I would actually be interested in such myself because I kinda like the displays on MacBooks and I could use a travel-friendly alternative to my current notebook.

They use low-power Core products in that line, so chances are, it’s probably the best the socket can handle, otherwise they would need to redesign the board.  Chances are, a quad-core upgrade is in the way, but needs more time. 

 

At the same time, for the stuff that you do on an Air, dual core with HT is more than enough,  you aren’t going to be hitting up Battlefield or Overwatch anytime soon anyway. It’s mainly just for office work, these products are designed for their use, not their specs.

Changing the system for performance changes what compromises are being made. There are already options for quadcore systems. Not everyone wants or needs that. The Air is an option to those people.

I agree, but doesn't the Gram have at least equal battery life while having better performance, being the same size and being lighter? I know that the battery on the Gram is larger, I'm not quite sure as to how long it lasts in reality though.

It depends on which of the dozens of models you choose.

Some manage the same battery life for basic web browsing and drop like rocks if running higher end processors for anything more. Some don't.

From what I can find, the Gram is very inconsistant between models. The 14" is the only one that I can find multiple reviews, and it manages 12 hours for HD video. The MBA is rated for 13 through iTunes, tests 9 to 10 when it was tested.

 

Also, wieght is more due to material choice.

 

Size wise, the Gram is also consistanly .6", the MBA tapers.

 

 

And there are other pieces of hardware in there other than just the processor.

No Chassis update, lazy upgrade on a 4th year product that has issues that needed a redesign to fix. I think this bolsters the idea that they are moving to ARM in 2020, and will launch a brand new MBP powered by it to replace this bad design.

Writing this on a 2014 Macbook Air.

 

I want more than a quad core MBA to have a Quad Core option for the MBP15. I dont need 8 cores in my laptop. I don't need 6 cores in my laptop, hell I don't even strictly need 4 cores in my laptop! This MBA is still being sold by apple today and it is probably the best laptop they sell for college students (being the cheapest, and having USB-A)

 

I do 1080P video editing on this thing, FCP runs perfect. The few games I would want to play at uni between classes run flawlessly (VA-11 HALL-A, Undertale). Will it crunch numbers like a desktop? No, but that's what my desktop is for. My laptop is strictly used for writing for hours at a time comfortably, and occasional editing if I have downtime. For this, the old Macbook keyboard (way better for long writing sessions than the new one) and a dual core with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD is plenty. Is it worth the $999 Apple demands for the old MBA? Honestly... I could easily recommend it if you are willing to pay the apple tax.

 

Also, iOS integration is priceless. So 100% recommend if you own an iPhone.

 

I'm more hyped for the 16" MBP than I am any MBA or MBP refresh. I want a true 17", but this is as good as we get.

I mean, the the produce stack is designed to have clear separation. It would be nice to have near full configurability, but if Apple did that, there would be too many configurations and too much competition between lines. 

 

The MacBook Air (in its current iteration) is a "College Campus" machine, the 13" MacBook Pros are the moderate performance and maximum portability machines, and the 15" MacBook Pros are for those who need the performance. 

 

Oh yeah and I guess the 12" MacBook is the ultra portable, mostly for managers and CEOs that don't do any real work.

people keep crapping on the thermals, but didn’t apple fix the i9 with a firmware patch like 2 weeks after it came out? I’m not saying it’s fantastic, but it isn’t as garbage as people are pretending.

though it has the room to have more than a 7w CPU. and yes, they most likely prioritized batteries to up the batterylife.
