Freenas drive issue?

I have been running a NAS on Freenas for a few months and it has all worked fine until today. The server was in the middle of updating when it crashed and now can't see the drive I have in it. The system boots and I can get into the web interface but if I try to manually install the update, it just says that some error occurred. Reinstalling and formatting the drive is not an option because it contains backups of all the computers in the house.

What are these for?

Do a clean install on your boot drives.  No need to touch your data drives.  Before an update it asks you do save your config file so easy installation in case something goes wrong.

What happened during the update.  You say 'crashed' but what do you mean?

Also, will I need to do a clean install of 11.1.U7 which I was updating to or 11.1.U5 which I was on before the update.

The server lost power due to a power cut.

Yikes no UPS?  What about your backup server?  Is that still running 11.1 - U5?

Any reason you aren't moving up to 11.2 - U4?

You'd re-install what was working on your machine.

It was the backup server, I had not relised that ithere was a 11.2-U4. And i can't afford a UPS at the moment.

Well if this is your back up server then there's no real worry about loss of data since you can always pull it from your primary server.

I'd recommend a UPS.  An inexpensive one would cover most servers and allow for proper shutdown.  You can get a CyberPower 1000VA/600W for around 100.

no, the server was a backup for the other computers in my house.

Ah, that's no good.  If the data is valuable (you said you can't lose it so I assume it is) you should have a back up to your server and if you can swing it an offsite back up as well.

Even if it's just an external HD from Western Digital a secondary back up is important.

I will make sure that the first thing I do when it gets going again will be to pull it all onto my external hard-drive.

Nice.

What are you using for your boot drive? and do you have a back up boot drive? It's a good idea to have mirrored boot drives to prevent boot failure issues.

I don't know what country you're in but you can get Intel 320 series 2.5" 40GB really cheap in the US.

I picked up two for mirrored boot drives for only 20.

I would do a filesystem check on your bootdisk https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?fsck(8)

Also your volumes will work with 11.2 so if you format the USB stick and re-install FreeNAS all your data will still be there. If you have a spare flash drive you could even verify before you format by temproarily installing 11.2 and booting to it and see what happens. Until you upgrade the pools you can flip back and forth without any worry.

Also to note, if you find a good deal on a UPS from say ebay or CL - new batteries are dirt cheap. I think last time I paid $12 per battery and only needed 4.

Well it would be your flash drive that's bad - your computer can't boot from non-os drives so that will always error oun.
