Wi-fi Woes

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Ok so about half the time I start up my computer Windows 8 says my wi-fi is limited. I run the troubleshooting program and it says to restart my modem/router. The wi-fi on my phone works fine so that's obviously not the problem.

I have even gotten a new wi-fi card (ethernet is impossible for me). One thing I notice is when I click on the wifi symbol of the taskbar, the menu on the side at the top says Wi-fi 2.

Is this because I have another card or something else? If you need me to provide any additional information just ask and I will. Thank you for your help.

Oh yeah, and if i run the troubleshooting program enough, or I restart my computer the wi-fi will work fine. I am completely puzzled.

(i'm bad with wifi)

Yes. The Wi-fi 2 simply means it is the second Wi-fi card that has been used in the machine. You can easily rename it if you really want to.

It could be a driver problem. Try uninstalling and deleting the driver using Device Manager, then install the latest drivers from the NIC manufacturer.

Thank you! I'll see if it works

Could it also just be a simple problem of having too many things blocking the signal. The card's receptors are buried in a corner behind two monitors and my huge Fractal r4- could that be it?

Could be. However I don't think the impact would be that big.

Any other suggestions other than ethernet?

I had an issue like this once where the router was having issues assigning an IP to my sister's computer. Went static and the issue went away. If none of the above helps, you could try and find an old router that's flashable to something like DD-WRT, and use that as a client. Your computer'll think you're on ethernet.

Yeah, try switching ISPs. Comcast was reviewed for having bad signals. Even though their speeds are high, some say the quality was poor.
