NEW YORK (Reuters) - Alphabet Inc’s Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and software products except those covered by open source licenses, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Sunday, in a blow to the Chinese technology company that the U.S. government has sought to blacklist around the world.

 

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app.

Could this be a potential lawsuit for Alphabet due to existing Huawei phones with android? Lawsuit from consumers that is. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

The article is pretty clear for most of it and it will apply to everywhere outside of China, except for Android updates which will take effect immediately for inside and outside of China. All the next iteration of phones sold outside of China moving forward will also not have support for Gmail and the Google Play Store when those phones come from Huawei. What I'm not sure if is why things within China will get that support but I'm sure more details will come on that part. Huawei will also lose all technical support and collaboration with Google and access to any feature of Android that is not covered by open-source licenses.

Hmm... I read it and didn't get the same vibe as you. Changed the title again to "Worldwide except China". The title is already pretty long.

 

Regardless, this will probably either kill Huawei's market outside of China or force them to create their own ecosystem or worse...

I've never owned a Huawei product before, but this is so unfair. They keep getting accused of stuff with no actual proof.

I don't really like Huawei because they seem shady as all hell but I can't say I expected this to ever happen... Holy crap

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I like how people think Hauwei was created 2 years ago for the sole reason to spy on the US. It's been around since the 80s and that also means no 5G as they are the sole owners of 5G network gear. All the 5G you see is fake too

Well, customers all over the world are now screwed because of this pissing contest. Funny thing is that Huawei was pretty much non-existent within the US. Their customer base was basically everyone but that country.

What? There are several companies out there with 5G network equipment including Qualcomm, Ericson and Nokia just to name a few. Huawei in no way is the sole producer of 5G gear.

I doubt it, when you buy a phone from huawei they are the company responsible for supporting and updating the phone; if they didn't have the foresight to make a contract with google that prevents this from happening (or carries a massive termination penalty) technically it's their fault they couldn't deliver on what they promised - if they promised continued updates for longer than they could deliver them that is, and even then they can still update their phones as long as they develop the updates themselves.

 

If alphabet is in breach of their contract with huawei I'm sure huawei will pursue them legally.

There is some proof that huawei representatives have been in shady dealings with chinese secret services, but that isn't what this is about - if the trump administration gave a sh*t about their citizens' privacy and had reason to believe huawei was threatening it they would simply ban imports from huawei. Instead they chose to basically erase the company from western markets to give an unfair advantage to companies that are either more likely to comply with their demands or are in various ways advantageous to them or their allies.

Interesting. Though, one has to wonder how many US companies they actually deal with, other than Google. It's not like they're dependent on Qualcomm like ZTE is.

How many versions back do you have to go before Android is open source? Isn't it always? I don't get how they lose out that much there, other than Google's support.

Couldn't they just side load the Play Store later?

You're not looking at it properly. This is an issue of national security (even if you don't care, that's what's being argued here), and since they're part of the Five Eyes, other countries of power don't really care what they (the US) collect. How many versions back do you have to go before Android is open source? Isn't it always? I don't get how they lose out that much there, other than Google's support.

Android is both open source and... not. The operating system itself is 100% open source, however google services are not and to a lot of people those services are what defines the Android experience. Here's a short list of some of the things that would be missing without google services:

  • google maps
  • google play
  • youtube
  • google calendar
  • gmail

There's a very good chance that if you use an Android phone you use at least a couple of these regularly. There are alternatives but they usually come with some caveats. And no, you can't sideload google play without google services.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Not screwed? How did you come up with that idea?

 

So how many P30s, Mate 20s and P20s (not to mention equivalent Honor models) are out there right now? It's at least double digit millions. I don't think it's triple but I honestly don't know how many units they've moved in that segment over the last year. 

 

Anyway, all those customers won't even see a single security patch. You could have bought a brand new P30 Pro a couple of weeks ago and now risk having an insecure device and you certainly won't get an OS update to Q.

 

The choice they have is to ditch their phone and buy a new one. That's a bad choice for most people.

 

Of course this is still at a hypothetical level but it looks like it might become reality.
