Twitch Streamers Paid up to 50k USD per hour by publishers for new games

The Wall Street Journal has published a new report that details how top streamers, those who attract 15,000 or more viewers simultaneously, can earn between $25,000 and $50,000 an hour when publishers pay them to stream a newly released game.

You have these streamers who have captive audiences of anywhere from 5,000 to 200,000 viewers at a time, depending on what they’re playing, and it’s a direct showcase of your product not in a thirty second, questionably targeted TV ad or pop-up banner, but it’s hours of gameplay at a time streamed directly to your target audience through the mechanism of a public figure they like and trust. There’s really nothing else like it across other forms of advertising. It’s like paying Lebron James to speak into a camera for two days straight about new pair of shoes on a stream watched by thousands or millions of captive fans. It’s a level of direct targeting and mass exposure to a product that is invaluable, so invaluable that $25-$50,000 an hour, depending on the streamer, is almost a steal, especially when you consider the tens of millions of dollars that are already spent on far more traditional and far less effective forms of advertising in the industry.

This makes sense, as it is much cheaper and effective than traditional advertising. Still, it's kinda strange how these people make more in an hour than most people do in a year. You have to have a big audience for this much, so it's not like there's no work involved.

There have been huge scandals over things like a journalist being fired for giving a low score to a game that was site’s advertising partner, though events like that are few and far between.

“We have the power to convince people to buy a game they’re on the fence about,” said Benjamin Lupo, one of the live-streamers Electronic Arts paid to play “Apex Legends” for a few hours at its release Feb. 4. “They see us as more trustworthy than a name they don’t recognize that wrote a review. They can see our faces. It’s live interaction."

So people trust them more because they…seem more like actual people than a byline on a page? It sounds strange, but it’s true, it really is. Streamers feel like friends. Most journalists don’t.

Oh they (the streamers) were paid by the publishers to play it.. From the title I thought it was the other way around, which I thought would have been weird :P

But this is not surprising to me (of course these numbers are esoteric to a plebian like me, the concept is not), it's quite a simple way to get a lot of eyes on your game, in a non-trailer setting.

 

Of course it can also go the other way around, e.g. game servers crashing on the streamer.. But I imagine they have some people pulling some strings in the background making sure the servers won't go down on the streamers.

It's funny -- there are some gamers who claim streamers are more authentic than game journalists, but don't flinch at the bias of a streamer being paid to play a game.

 

This isn't even to knock streamers for doing it, so long as they disclose what they do -- it's that you shouldn't expect an objective stance from someone who literally received cash from the company.

I can see why. Streaming is a great way to advertise games, videos used to be the best but they lack the interactivity and spontaneity of streams.

I mean, they are payed to play the game, not review it. There's a pretty big difference between the two and most of the time you can tell if a streamer is genuinely enjoying the game by their reactions (and if they keep playing it after a week or so).

Every single streamer who is doing it has "#sponsored" in his streaming title during the sponsored game times. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone why that's there.

Streamers usually aren't allowed to talk about the numbers they get for the sponsored streams but there have been some streamers who already said that they revieve "insane" ammount of money for it. Especially mobile games, those are willing to pay a lot of money even to smaller streamers.

Im not sure how they got that number tho, because as @Medicatesaid, they aren't supposed to talk about it.

 

It's kind of funny to see stories like this, however, because so many people still don't see streaming as a "real job". Yes, it's hard to make it, but you get in it what you get out of it. Its probably the easiest way to "make it" in the entertainment industry, streaming is.

 

I don't have the patience for it (streaming, or gaming for more than an hour or 2), but I sure am missing out. Even as a lawyer these streamers make what my starting salary would be in 2 hours.

Meh, streamers who can pull 5000-200,000 viewers at a time are essentially celebrities. Getting that kind of success requires an insane amount of work, talent, and luck. It's no surprise to me that they're paid massively. 

 

I also don't see any problem with it. It's not like the publishers are paying streamers to lie to their audiences or to advertise the game. Playing a game =/= shilling it.

as long as they are transparent about the fact they are sponsored and dont get a modified version of the game or something its fine

Probably not tbh. That would distract from the gameplay. People might not even remember what game was being played if that us the thing that pulled them in.
