2 modems, two places

We have currently got a two storey house and the internet isn’t great downstairs because the modem is upstairs. We’re planning on getting a second modem but don’t know if it will work. Is this possible, having to seperate modems in two places, only connected to the wall sockets yet running the same network?

How is downstairs connected? Over wifi? Lan directly connected to the router?

Just run a access point + optional switch to other computers etc to lower level from top level?

Nope, you can't have two modems. Modem must be at the end of the line that comes into your house. It converts a DSL connection to Ethernet (two different standards, very simplified right now).

If you want to extend your wireless network, run a cable and connect an access point to it. If you want to extend your wired network, get a switch and run cables to the devices you want to connect.

You can also use powerline if your speeds are not very high (depending on the electrical wiring) as powerline can top out at about 100-300 Mbps from what I have heard. It can also be less stable than Ethernet or WiFi.

Possible, well yes in some instances. To make it clear Im talking about cable internet (Coax). Two modems for internet service would be considered two separate internet accounts. AKA two separate bills. In some cases people who have digital voice service thru their cable provider might use one modem for voice and another for internet, and you can do that on one account.

There are many ways to to extend your current network. One you can run Ethernet, this is the best option. Two you can look at power line adapters and or Moca adapters. Three, as mesh system might work.
