Brad Bennett, senior channel marketing manager for the Middle East and Africa, said he is uncertain when the 20TB HDD will be released.

“We can’t tell you when it will be available because even we don’t know yet,” said Bennett.

This is pretty cool, but however since Bennett himself said that they don't know when it will be released, so this is a far far future.

That's funny, my WD Caviar Black 640GB HDD last to almost 10 years, and still running as my primary OS.

I remember asking WD just before I bought my last 4TB Black form them if they planned on introducing a six TB Black soon. They replied that they had no plans to do so. Less than six months later, they introduced a 6TB WD Black. So, since they are announcing that they will be introducing a 20TB HDD, I supect it will be soon.

Yeah, they last a long time, my 640GB WD Black is also still kicking after 10 odd years... Same with my 1TB WD Black.

Seagate drives on the other hand... In my experience, don't nearly last as long.

Seagate has been saying "100TB+ HDDs" for years. While they technically aren't too far off from their road map, I'll believe it when I see it. Especially since WD has been a bit behind Seagate in capacity since they rebranded (at least in their consumer lines).

I have 3xxGB WD drive from around 2006 still kicking in my server. I wouldn't put critical data on it but i got random game servers running stored on that drive. I also have a seagate drice still running from around the same time kicking. I would never trust either for anything important but for temp files they're perfect.

Western Digital HGST DC HC530 14TB is currently cost $543.29... So my estimate WD 20TB with new HAMR will be $860-900...

I stil have an old 320 GB seagate laptop HDD, spent its whole life as a OS drive but it still works... I also have 4 ironwolf but those are 2 years old max.

I still remember being promised consumer priced 30TB SSDs back in 2014 for 2018, which didn't happen. At least this time they didn't even bother with a date.

 

Also, is it just me or did HDD prices never recover after the 2010 flood or whatever it was?

I'm pretty sure this is just WDs response to Seagate's recent announcement that it will be releasing 18TB SMR drives soon.

"Oh? They have 18TB drives? Well, we will make 20TB drives!!"

Western Digital is putting their eggs in the MAMR (microwave assisted magnetic recording) basket.

HAMR (heat assisted magnetic recording) is Seagate's approach. AFAIK WD isn't planning any HAMR drives, but it's all new technology so who knows which direction things will go in a few years.

Same, I still have a 640GB, a 750GB, and a 1TB WD Blacks working to this day.

 

My eldest drive though is my 160GB Seagate Barracuda.
