Fastest way to check a fake SD?

So whats the absolute fastest way to fill up a micro SD card to 32-254 gigs to see if its really 512gigs?

Only asking because occasionally ill go on sketchy platforms and buy new or used or shipped from chinese warehouse parts, so far ive had pretty good luck with not getting ripped off i thought i had one day because i popped the card in and it was posting at 37gigs and it was supposed to be 32 but turned out to be an issue with the phone i was using because i filled it up and no corruption.

However i just ordered a 512gig micro sd last night for around 12$ shipping included, current prices im expecting it to be a modified 64gb card or worse.

So any faster methods besides downloading/transferring appreciated

Expect it to be 16GB or worse instead. 32 and 64 are not happening for $12.

Just out of curiosity - how much you pay in the US for a medium/high tier memory card / usb stick ? Like in an average shopping centre or something.

Can you really save that much buying risky stuff?

Yes you can, the risk is part of the fun a high end card like 512gig is about 100$.

A 400 gig sandisk at best buy is about 80$ before tax

A 64gig in store is about 20-30$

Theres also the new 1Terabyte SD card that just released for sale thats like 450$ USD on sandisks site

Depends on brand as well

A 512gb sandisk is 200$

There often is no way to tell if a card is counterfeit unless there is someting obvious about it, such as 64 GB card having only 8GB capacity (and stick with relieable major brands to avoid poor quality cards). The best way to avoid gettting a counterfeit card is to avoid dodgy vendors. Forget e-Bay (especially the Chinese vendors!). Even Amazon can't be trusted because it has been known to replenish its own stock from dodgy Marketplace vendors when it runs out of stock after accepting an order (even that scenario should never happen but does). The only online vendors in the U.S. I will ever trust to buy any kind of flash drives (including SSDs) from are New Egg and B&H Photo Video. Also, local major brick and mortar vendors, such as Best Buy and Office Depot can be trusted.

h2test. I run it on every piece of media I get, partly as a burn in, and partly as a counterfeit check. Unfortunately, it does take a bit to run (make sure you have a fast SD reader).

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey guys, heres an update on the SD card.

It finally came in the mail from the dodgy chinese vendor i got it off of, it is infact a working 512gb SD card paid around 6 bucks for it + another 6 just in shipping, came in a really nice plastic case as well but i loaded it up popped a few videos on it then downloaded a bit of my steam library to it as well as random vids and dumped part of my external HDD on it... Mostly the porn section and nothing got corrupted so i saved about 180-190bucks

Maybe, maybe not. Many fakes will last for short while before they fail. I had one that lasted a couple of years before it died. You better have the data you put on it backed up (you should have it backed up anyway, even if it isn't a fake).

There are fakes and there are below quality copies/counterfeits. The total fakes don't work as advertised slow speed/lower storage/deletes files. The low quality ones are just slower speed and more unreliable (prone to failure).

Semantics. If it isn't genuine, it doesn't matter if it's called a counterfeit, a copy, a knockoff, whatever, and doesn't work, just doesn't perform as well, or just doesn't last as long, it's still a fake.
