Best CPU for a GTX 1080 and PUBG?

So... I been living under a rock recently and lost the track of CPU models, currently I have an i5 6600k OC'd to 4.60 Ghz but I feel like its bottlenecking my GTX 1080, in PUBG CPU runs almost all the time at 100% and when it hits 100% I get stutter and choppy behaviour I know PUBG is not perfectly optimized but that's what I play

I also need a good mobo for that CPU with good audio chip for my sennheiser x58 headphones, I'm not planning on buying a dac/amp so a good chip would be nice, I currently have a ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII GENE but the audio pops sometimes and it's really unpleasant, I'm thinking about trying a different brand this time, idk.

Price is a problem I'm not into super high enthusiast level$$$, I just want to play PUBG without hiccups want to get all the juice possible from my 1080 and decent audio for sennheiser headphones

by the way I'm playing on a 144hz monitor at 1080p, I got a Corsair AIO for cooling

Hope you guys can help me, Thanks!

New Ryzen processors in a matter of weeks, how long can you wait?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I'd say your i5-6600K is probably perfectly fine mated to your GTX 1080. PUBG run at 1080P very low settings barely even begins to show a CPU bottleneck dropping down to the Core i3. I doubt you run it remotely close to the lowest settings, so you're going to be GPU bound first and foremost.

the new map (vikendi) is where the bottlenecking feels the most, I don't play with everything on low, I need High distance view and High anti aliasing for competitive

Same story for the vikendi map, it seems. You're going to be GPU bound first. In PC Gamer's tests, they measured a 20% difference between their fastest and slowest CPUs (i3-8100 vs i9-9900K) at 1080P ultra settings, then at 1440P and above there was virtually no difference.

The most turn-key upgrade you could pull off would be an i7-7700K, but for PUBG the gains would be a marginal few percentage points, if any.

4790k or higher.

It's all I have and does a 1070 OC just fine at 1080p Pubg.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I saw the 9700k costs $400 that might be the highest I can go for a CPU, about the mobo: I will use a full tower atx case like I said I need good audio and if possible wifi integrated and bluetooth? thatd be nice

I come from a time where amd cpu's used to heat really bad but you're right there's a first time for everything, I just searched and seems like its gonna be a good chip and since amd is doing so well in the cpu market it might worth the wait, I was thinking going with intel since its the best for gaming right now and ryzen is good for gaming but not the best, IF I don't want what would be your cpu recommendation right now? trying to save a buck if possible

Waiting for new Ryzen is still the best bet, because when the new AMD processors come out, the competition will likely force Intel to cut prices so if their processors remain the best at gaming, you can get a better deal regardless.

Vikendi is poop and it stutters on that map. I’ve got a ryzen 7 1800x @4ghz with a rtx2060 1080p it stutters. My best friend has a 8700k at 4.8ghz with a rtx2070 1440p and vikendi stutters. That map runs like shit and tanks framerates at the most random places.

I dont struggle to play any of the other maps or games but vikendi runs bad. I wouldn’t judge your rig on a unoptimized game.

Haven’t played the new map, but knowing that a 4790k can’t get full ultilization from a 1080 at 1080p I’d assume it’s just the game at this point.

Some of the maps are a bit better but prolly best to adjust some nvidia settings for the game.

or just upgrade the cpu anyway. Which is what I’d do given how old cpus fair on new games.

Honestly, there's no reason to be "uncomfortable" with AMD chips anymore. Yes in the past they ran hot and didn't perform as well as Intel's offerings but that's not the case anymore. I have a Ryzen 5 1600 OC'd to 3.9GHz that doesn't get above 60C on full all core load (with a £45 aftermarket cooler, not that the box cooler isn't good) and to be quite brutally honest, with all the recent security breaches being uncovered in Intel's architectures, I'd feel more comfortable with AMD. Not to mention they are generally better value when you think about MOBO cost as well as CPU.

AMD doesn't perform as well as Intel when it comes to getting high framerates.

  1. Give it a few months and that may not be true.
  2. You have to consider though. In a lot of titles, the increase in framerates may only be about 10-15% but you have to pay maybe 20-30% more. And depending on the part. If that extra cost puts you from 110FPS to 120FPS when you're playing on a 60 or 75Hz panel, it really makes no sense to spend the extra.

It also may still be true.

OP is playing on 1080 144hz. So, in the context of this post, it would make sense to spend the extra, if within budget.
