packet loss driving me crazy

Recommended Posts

(can't really find a networking forum so i'll post here if this is the wrong place to then feel free to move this thread)
i'm suffering from really bad packet loss in game, keeps spiking up latency then stabilising for a few seconds to lag again. I'm currently connected to the internet through wireless adapter. I have used wireless all my time of having a PC and it has  never been this bad. I'm not sure if it's my internet provider or my computer hardware causing the problem. A lot of people have said to "use a wired connection" but what, run a cable all the way downstairs to my wifi router and connect a cable like that?

please, any help, games are so unplayable rn

if you need more info please ask

1. Wired eternet IS the superior choice. MoCA (effectively converts coax to ethernet) might be a "close enough" alternative. DECA is cheap MoCA at lower speed that works when you don't use cable TV (so DIRECTV or nothing on the line). Powerline is NOT a good alternative.
2. Point to Point wireless, with as minimal distance/obstructions as possible is a decent alternative (think Mikrotik Wireless wire).
3. If neither 1 nor 2 works, look into AP and adapter placement. For a while I used two Ubiquiti nanoHDs, one as an AP and the other as an uplink to my desktop - ROCK SOLID. A cheaper variant would be two AC Lites, or at least one AC Lite located closer to where you need it. Having a wireless router in the corner of your home is a bad set up.

For reference, Networking is under "Computer Hardware" :)
