Playing games whilst on vacation overseas (sort of)

AlTech

Hi there,

later this summer I might be going on vacation somewhere and I still want to be able to play games sometimes while I'm there. I'm not taking a plane. if I go it will be a few very fast trains.

For most games I'd want to play this isn't a problem because my UHD 620 is surprisingly not bad at certain lesser demanding titles. My problem stems from games like GTA Online and one or two other similarly demanding games.

I have a desktop rig but I'm in no mood to bring that with me just for a few weeks.

My laptop is a Thinkpad T480 with an i7-8550U with a 25w cTDP so for all intents and purposes the CPU portion is good enough for anything I'll need. It's just the GPU which is UHD 620 graphics.

My laptop does have Thunderbolt 3 and if necessary I could probably take out my Vega 56 from my desktop rig and bring it with me if I had a eGPU enclosure. But that seems like a really expensive and a long term solution to a short term problem.

What should I do if I still want to be able to play somewhat demanding games on Vacation?

Mods if you see this thread turning bad then please put an end to it and if it needs to be moved then please move it.

Thanks :).

Well, for all the games I play (TF2, GTA Online, Minecraft, and War Thunder), integrated graphics are fine. If I were you, I'd look at tweaking the graphics on some games, like you can with TF2 and CS:GO. External GPUs are kinda pointless IMO.

GTA Online on Intel UHD graphics? That 720p less than  30 fps experience would make me motion sick.

I mean whatever you decide, it's not going to be cheap because you either need to make a purchase to add something to what you have or make a new system.

GTA was a bad example, but everything else I mentioned either runs well as it is or requires minor tweaking (Optifine for MC, some startup options/custom config for TF2).

My point is that most games should be fine without using an external GPU.

I suppose you could use an eGPU, but I just don't see the point, especially since the cheapest one is, like, $200 and you still need your own GPU (and a power source).

Which GPU does it have? It looks like the 15" laptop comes with the GTX1050 and the 17" comes with a 1070 or a rx580 which is a significant difference, but this could be different models (though I did specifically google HP omen one)

Power source isn't an issue and neither is the GPU part. I can just use my Vega 56 for GPU.

Firstly, do you know if you’ll have a good internet connection?

I think investing in a GPU encloser would be a good solution, or buy that new i9 Alienware laptop.

Weird, googling HP OMEN one brings up laptops.

(Found it) that thing is nice, but it's honesty quit e a bit bigger than it needs to be. I'd imagine that would be a pain to transport. But it's an option nonetheless, and (relatively) inexpensive

There seems to be tons of cheap ones in the US and I could theoretically buy one from there and have it delivered but I'd need to pay customs tax and stuff.

I guess it depends on if it's still cheaper to import from the US. That research I cant adequately help you with :(

Edit: If your vacation happens to be in the US, you could probably have it shipped to your hotel/resort/place of rest. That wouldnt give you a lot of time to play around with settings/troubleshooting, but it would most likely be cheaper.

I know that they add 20% VAT and usually also an extra 5-15%

So £199 HP Omen enclosure might not be a bad idea but it's still kinda expensive.

your on vacation, don't play demanding games for your hardware play demanding games for your mind .... even if you don't like them ..

Get the free game Star General for instance ... it would look great on your device, this game being being from around 97
or Doom one , another game that is free available... want multiplayer check out the free indie mp department lots and lots of silly tiny games that are loads of fun to play against others and still have a decent fanbase ....

Otherwise, maybe the 2070 box is something you would like, less consuming then that vega but it is around 800 euro's

I already own a Vega56 in my rig. Not looking to buy a new graphics card anytime soon.

The idea of spending £199 already for a used enclosure is bad enough and it is discouraging that no cheaper options seem to be good enough for what I need.
