So what is the drama regarding Steam and Epic about?

 

If you want a game that is only on Epic, what is the problem with downloading it from Epic?

Aside from the (quite exaggerated) scandal of Epic being Chinese spyware, the platform itself is also far inferior, and people greatly dislike having to add another platform to their PC just to expand their library.

You are directly supporting exclusives. Epic is also mostly owned by Tencent and collects an incredible amount of data about you and your PC

It's a mess, one is people are already on Steam, It's like if your friends are all on Facebook and WeChat decided to make contracts with some of the large creators, News stations, and other things that you want to follow, so that they will stick exclusively to WeChat, and you can't share the videos/posts with your friends on Facebook. Also another recent issue is that because Epic (owned by Tencent) acquired the company that owns Easy Anticheat, whom was working with Valve to adapt their software to work  on Linux as part of Valve's Proton project to bring Windows games to Linux, and of course as Epic owns the company that made EAC, they have "diverted" their software engineers away from the Valve's project towards other ones.

Personally, I feel that Steam offers more for the consumer, with features like:

  • Family Sharing (buy once for the entire family, with separate save files)
  • Steam Workshop (user mods)
  • Steam In-Home Streaming (download once, use on multiple PC's, or use a remote PC to run a game and stream video to less powerful one)
  • Big Picture Mode (Console like control)
  • Good controller support
  • VR Dominance
  • Steam Box, Controller, and VR Headset

 

I also don't like the look of the Epic Games store, but that is just my personal taste. I understand many like it.

 

While Steam does take a larger cut from game developers, they also are using those funds to create features for the users, and even dedicated hardware. The Epic Games store just seems like a place to earn money, while Steam seems like a place for the consumers to have their way.

I'll stick with Steam for the time being, I won't support a company that makes exclusivity deals just for the sake of getting more customers. Very anti consumer in my opinion, with all that fortnite money they could work on making a better launcher than steam is.

Lots of drama. Only valid point being games announced on Steam being pulled in favor of Epic. Everything else is hogwash. People tend to forget that Steam also collects data and Steam was once craptastic too.

If you looking for answers, sincerely, just do your own research. People are being very quick at not respect others opinions about it (and I say it for both sides pro/cons Epic) and very good at just give the top of the iceberg informations. What I can say is: look at the videos about it (there are tons), then get some articles about health competition and some other market stuffs, then at some point (it can be even before you do the research) you can decide if you care or don't. Since the other player (Steam) still didn't do anything about all of it, all that still remains are the people's own opinions, acceptations and frustrations.

This is probably a good thing in the long run as it might encourage Valve to turn their focus away from the DOTA money printer and make another Portal/Half-Life/something new which they could offer as an exclusive.

People just don't want to download a new launcher. You can add games as a non-Steam game to Steam so you still get your friends list. Every store of any kind needs exclusives to get people to go there. Blizzard has Starcraft 2, Valve has Dota 2, Netflix has their own shows, and so on for everything. The only place you'll find 1 store that has everything is in a completely closed off and uncompetitive market like consoles or phones. I remember before Steam had any competition on PC and it didn't even have something as basic as the ability to return a game.

 

Steam does have some nice features like big picture mode though.

You'd have to talk to individual, from individual and the problems they create for themselves. I myself have had zero problems with Steam, with Epic, with UPlay, with Origin, with GOG Galaxy, with Blizzard, with Game Sessions. Well, one problem with Game Sessions. They don't let you monitor your temps and usages with MSI Afterburner. That's a problem for me. So I rarely care to play the games Game Sessions give out for free because of it. The day I get Hitman Absolution somehow is the day I uninstall Game Sessions.

 

As for Epic exclusives, if they ain't free or worth their price tag, I probably won't ever even know they exist.

In addition to what's been said, a number of crowdfunded games have suddenly made an exclusivity deal with Epic not long before release, which has rubbed a good number of people who funded said games the wrong way since suddenly the game that was once marketed to them as "a passion project that just needs you to fork over a couple of bucks so we can complete it" is now a cash cow of unspecified size for the developer.

 

It doesn't help that in some cases, the devs in question literally put out a message stating that they made the deal despite knowing there would be a backlash, as if the people they were "so thankful for helping us realize this project" can just be brushed aside as collateral damage the moment corporate money gets involved.

You can install the good old peer guardian and turn it on and open epic launcher and see for yourself.

 

I have recently switched to a pfSense linux PC so i could block them through pfBlock and it works wonder. Only get connections from China when navigating web pages or epic launcher has been running for a minute or 2. I personally find it a big coincidence but i am not an expert enough to know if it's just a pure coincidence 100% of the time.

because there's literally nothing I have to gain through the epic game store existing. it's just another shitty installer/spyware i have to install. I'll just stick with pirating games on that terrible platform if i want to play them.

I guess you can view it in a similair way as you can view steam game reviews these days....

More then 80% of the comments seem to be made by people that all seem to share a couple of similarities such as

A : played the game for almost 3 hours
B : are probably not English native
C : base their review on mostly negatives provided by other reviewers
D : are completely ignorant to the different genres pc gaminglive is rich
E : don't understand the difference between telling someone you don't like it and telling someone an unbiased opinion on a game
F : a need to feel heared ( this is actually human )

Everybody loves Steam because it's a feature-rich platform that we've been using for many years. They also love GoG because it has plenty of features like Steam + certain unique advantages.

 

Epic Store, on the other hand, is a very barebones Chinese spyware launcher with virtually no useful features such as reviews, forums, time played, fps counter, etc. At the same time, Epic forces timed exclusivity on some games on PC by throwing Fortnite money at developers, which in turn forces users to use the crappy Epic Store if they want to play those games. Or pirate.

 

To top it all off, Epic also buys off crowdfunded games such as Outer Wilds, or games that have been advertised on Steam up until that point, which is just an obnoxious business practice that makes users rightfully mad.

I'd love Steam if it would give me the ability to download offline launchers for their games. I'd buy everything on GOG if I could, because if my internet is down, my entire Steam and Uplay libraries go with it. Ditto if Valve and Ubisoft were to go bankrupt overnight.

 

Call me old-fashioned, but I'd like to be able to actually buy games rather than just pay a fee to be allowed to play games by the grace of company shareholders. It's the same problem I had with DVDs a decade and a half ago: I went to a store to buy a legal copy of a film only to be rewarded with 2 or more unskippable anti-piracy ads (because surely my not pirating their movie is the best situation to remind me that I should not pirate) as well as two or more equally-unskippable trailers for unrelated films that I already ignored in the store. It's like the distributor is working from the assumption that I'm just waiting for a chance to steal their stuff, and in so doing, are undermining their own case against piracy.

 

The last thing I need now is another, more restrictive (from my perspective) to add to the ones that I already use through gritted teeth. Steam may have its issues, but it at least lets me know when a game I've been hoping to pick up some day is on sale so I can buy it at a discount. If I'm going to download another launcher, it sure as hell won't be the one that's currently operating with an unsustainable business model just so they can undercut the competition.
