Ok this makes no sense - windows keyboard just plain broke

limegorilla

Just for context, I am a Windows Insider. That could have something to do with this, but hey I thought it was funny.

Ok so I’m using my computer as normal. Then I go away for a few minutes and come back. My mouse is behaving really badly. Stuttering, randomly becoming unresponsive - the works.

So I restart.

When I arrive at the login screen, everything seems normal. I go to put in the pin for my account. It’s four lower case letters followed by a number. Easy enough.

Except it isn’t because my laptop seems to be constantly holding down shift. The number becomes the shifted variant of that key (so 1 would become ! And so on)

at at this point I’m like shit. Razer are not great with support and I don’t have the invoice for this laptop I’m fucked.

So I go into Windows recovery, just to see if that does anything, but no. Everything is still wrong. Then I have a bright idea. My laptop is touch. I’ll just use the touch keyboard till I figure out what’s wrong.

Well it turns out that’s fucked too. I have no clue what the hell has happened, but trying that same password in recovery using the touch keyboard yields the same results as the normal keyboard in normal windows. It also just starts inputting tons of random keys every few minutes.

As far as where I’m going to go from here, I’m just going to reinstall Windows and go from there. I’m 99% sure it’s all software now the touch keyboard isn’t working either.

Fun times

Before you go reinstall Windows, test it in a live Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) distro, without installing. That way you can rule out hardware issues.

If Razer support doesn’t work maybe the windows support  will? If not then go to device manager and try to update the driver of your keyboard  uninstall the keyboard from your rig then restart the computer. or maybe try caps lock?

  • 4 months later...

I just want to update this seeing as I, well, didn't.

Turns out it was a keyboard controller. Seeing as I used to live on an island in the middle of the pacific, it has taken almost 4 months for this to be sorted. My experience with Razer support was meh. My laptop came back missing the bottom and track pad dbrand skin, and I had some software problems (fixed with the good ol' windows reinstall) out of the box, that frankly I don't expect from something I paid over a grand for.

In fact everything has been so bad that I'm now selling the (completely fixed) laptop. It's a shame, but it's almost wrecked the experience of using it for me.

:(
