My friend just blew up his 9900k

So I have a buddy, not close friend really but I help him or educate him on PC and software and hardwore.  He knows about overclocking and I told him its a good idea to CO.  He asked what CPU to buy for gaming 80 percent and 20 percent video editing and photoshop and I suggested the 9900k no shock there.  Anyhow I haven't talked to him in 3 months.  Last thing I remember was we got him Turbo and 5Ghz with a nice voltage, not sure what it was.  Anyhow I get a message from him the unthinkable happened.  Looks like the guy was running at 1.50v so he can compete with his friend on who has highset OCed CPU.  Anyhow for 2 months he told me he ran at this voltage.  As I said I got a message from him "btw his cooler is a Noctua DH-15 and ya the sh*T hit the fan.  he otld me he woke up today and turned on computer it came on fans starting spinning but nothing no post just black.  Luckily he has a friend who has a 9700k and he was able to snatch it and put it in his motherboard to troubleshoot and it worked there was post and computer booted right into windows.  This lead both of us to believe he fried his chip.  Guy please no more then 1.40v on this cpu.  That is too much by itself even.  More like 1.37v for 5Ghz and be happy.  He got greedy and now  I guess h can send it to install or I don't know if thats possible and will cry unfair play and he fuked it up himself by raising voltage so high and what not.  Sad story.... but hopefully he can sort this out with Intel.  I don't know what their policies re with CPU as Ive never dealt with them regarding this.

TL:DR his friend fried his CPU running it at 1.5v 24/7.

You know.. this is something anyone with any simple knowledge of CPU overclocking would know this is not an acceptable voltage to run at.. never run above 1.35-1.4v at most for 24/7. Hell even 1.4 is pushing it IMO.

Yes my friend your right.  I remember when we got him going intially I believe I told him do not set vcore past 1.38v not even 1.4v.  sighs

That is a truly astonishing accomplishment, CPUs are very hard to break. I once carried around a very old Pentium D in my pocket for an entire day and it still works fine.

good thing your friend bought a really high end mobo (assuming) otherwise it would be both or just the mobo

Yes, at first I thought hie PSU went bad.  He had access to a 9700k so he did the simple and effective trouble shooting athe it booted up nicely so ya.  At least his mobo isn't fried or PSU.  I don't know how intel is on RMA, but will they cry out foul play and say he abused the chip or something ?

well intel can say anything they want because its their rules, honestly i never really use RMA for CPU. but my god 1.4V is very brave does your friend have Big D and B or something?

The question remains to be asked. Who told him 1.5v is okay?

No my friend he set it to 1.50v lol.  For about 2 months.  He never told me until earlier today.  1.50v is death sentence. lolol

If he didn't tweak his VCCIO/VCCSA he probably fried his memory controller. Still 1.5v is retarded at any kind of load. Especially on an air cooler. Jesus that thing must have been thermal throttling like crazy. There is litterly no way that it wasn't throttling under any kind of load. It must have been at close to 300 watts.

Their policy is that unless you bought the extended warranty, they have a right to deny you a replacement because you overclocked.

Yeah dude thats what Im thinking in my head.  As I said hes just a aquitance not really a friend I just hleped him out and taught him a few things.  Last I left his new machine was 5Gzh Turbo and 1.36 or 1.37v and what not.  Why did he take it to 1.50v to get 5.2.  I mean really is there a difference betrween 5Ghz and 5.2Ghz.  Well he fried it and it gave me a sorta sad but funny thread out of it.

Those are much much older and had different requirements back then. Does not apply.

There is no real benefit to 5.2 except for bragging rights. Mine hits 5.1 at 1.325 -1.36 depending on the mobo and I can't keep it under mid 90's on a 360 AIO with prime 26.6 small fft at those settings.

That is insane my friend.  90's c wtf with liquid cooling doesn't sound right.  But I do know synthetic bench or stability test like Prime95 is not a good idea to run.  It stressed the CPU in a way it will never get stressed in the real world and the temps are 10c high then AIda64 stability test,,, trust Aida and don't run Prime95 and abuse the CPU ya know.  As long as your 70's c in game then that's impressive.

It does when Intel spec the VID right up to 1.5V...meaning that it can be an acceptable voltage to run at. As long as Intel says it is.

Yeah my chip is weird. It hits a bit of a wall with temps over 5 ghz. I can run it there at 1.24 (under load reported by HWI64 1.265 in bios) and it doesn't even go above 80c peak with small FFT. I can hit stock all core under 1.1. I'm pretty sure it would do 5.2 all day with a custom loop. I'm not willing to spend $500 + to find out. It's overkill for me anyway. I listed the whole rig sans GPU on CL.
