Ah, forgot about Zen 2. Should have also mentioned that he doesn't want to mess with overclocking. With that being said, would you still recommend going with the non X variant?

You decide if it's worth it: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-2600X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2600/3956vs3955

I still think your friend should wait for Zen 2 though.

As the title states, he wants to keep the price range as close to $1000 as possible. One thing to keep in mind is that I already have a power supply, so that part won't be needed in the list.

Only thing I might be particularly concerned about is the cpu and graphics card combo, but according to a benchmark I found they should be able to stay above 60 fps at 1440p. Let me know what you guys think

Check out this build:

Switched out the R5 2600X for a R5 2600, since they perform about the same when overclocked. Threw in some faster memory, a higher capacity SSD, different video card, and a cheaper case. Your friend can add a CPU cooler and more storage to this build if needed.

I honestly recommend tellling your friend to wait until Zen 2 chips hit the market before building a PC. Those CPUs may be slightly better (and cheaper) than what AMD and Intel have to offer today.

CPU: Intel Core i7-950 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R CPU Cooler: NZXT HAVIK 140 RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 (1x2GB), Crucial DDR3-1600 (2x4GB), Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600 (1x4GB) GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 770 DirectCU II 2GB SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" 1TB HDDs: WD Green 3.5" 1TB, WD Blue 3.5" 1TB PSU: Corsair AX860i & CableMod ModFlex Cables Case: Fractal Design Meshify C TG (White) Fans: 2x Dynamic X2 GP-12 Monitors: LG 24GL600F, Samsung S24D390 Keyboard: Logitech G710+ Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum Mouse Pad: Steelseries QcK Audio: Bose SoundSport In-Ear Headphones

Cooler Master V650 semi-modular. According to the tier list it's pretty decent

Fixed the build.

Got a better monitor, better GPU to run the monitor at the cost of storage and different case.

This would be a better build to run with. Especially at 1440p

Wait for Zen 2 is still gonna be the best idea. That said, here's and idea / some notes!

I understand you're not planning to OC, so the X variant does have a higher core clock. That said if we step back a gen to the 1600 we lose very little in performance to the 2600. Big budgeting pivot.

  • The Tomahawk is a great board. You don't need so much if you're not OCing though. I opted for the B450M Pro 4, since the VRM support is good for general use. Good savings here.
  • Your RAM was 2400mhz, which will throttle a Ryzen CPU. They prefer dual channel 3000-3200mhz to stretch their legs. I did 3000mhz for $1 less.
  • I went with less brand snobby brands on the storage. Crucial is great, and that's just going to provide a boot drive. The 3TB 7200RPM Hitachi has plenty of room for storage. (saved some on drives. Could also just grab a 500GB SSD for $60 and call it good.)
  • For only $20 more, the Vega 64 is an RTX 2070's performance for a 2060's cost. This will be a significant upgrade.
  • Kept a Cooler Master case that includes some fans. It is a MicroAtx build to go with the MOBO.
  • I upped the monitor to a 1440p 144hz 1ms variant. Great stats!

So... Small hit to the CPU, MOBO, and SSD. Improved RAM, drastically improved GPU and monitor. All for $20 less than the initial post :)
