Those bezels are absolutely horrible lol wow. Google should stick to selling everyone's personal data and killing product lineups. Only thing they seem to be good at these days

Is the pricing in the video in Canadian pesos? $549 and $649 are way higher than $399 and $479 on Anandtech for example. I can't find anywhere selling it at this point to confirm.

I got major Nexus 5X flashbacks because of the plastic backing on the Pixel 3a compared to the metal on the regular Pixel 3, akin to the Nexus 6P.

 

I wonder how much Google will support the Pixel 3a though in comparison to the regular Pixel 3 in terms of software updates.

Looking more at it, it seems to be what I want in a phone except the price is just on the high side of the sweet spot where I'd bite without hesitation. Now it is enough I'm thinking, what else is there at that price point?

A plastic Android phone with mid tier chipset and data hoarding OS going against an all glass and aluminium case with top of the line chipset that's not even really matched by any top of the line Android even today and OS that at least respects some privacy in XR. The screen resolution is really just dick measuring competition that only select people can barely notice even while smearing their eyeballs at the display glass surface. And don't get me started with shitty software support on 3rd party Androids and limited on Google's own models. Of course there is a price difference then and for good reasons. Thanks, but I'd still take XR again. In fact, I'd take an iPhone over ANY Android at the moment. This is coming from someone who absolutely hated Apple and even said I'd never ever use ANY Apple product. And here I am. That's how bad Google is.

 

Android may be "open" and all that crap, but Google's on phones hoard so much user data, 3rd party Androids hoard on Google's side and their own, especially Chinese ones and to top it all, Android apps are even worse offenders infested with Facebook and similar shit even if you don't use those services AT ALL. I know I just sound like the worst conspiracy theorist, but people don't realize what a terrible state privacy is in currently. Even with Apple, it's all down to trust, but at least they are trying to go in the right direction, providing settings that apps actually have to respect, with way more control on analytics side and even give you insight on what is being sent to Apple as part of analytics and not being honest about it could cost them everything if it turns out they were dishonest about it. And policy about iOS apps is way stricter than with Android and how they hoard user data.

I agree, the bezels are fine and the plastic back isn't much of a complaint either especially for a $399 phone. And I'd rather have a plastic backing because it won't shatter if I drop it and could care less if the glass back "feels better" as I put a case on my phones anyway.

I get what you're saying, but for $399 a plastic back just seems a little cheap. My Mi A2 which cost me a little under £200 has a full metal construction, the same amount of RAM and storage, a slightly bigger battery and a Snapdragon 660 which is the one just down from the CPU in the Pixel 3a. It's an Android One device as well so it has Android Pie and more than likely Android Q. Now admittedly it doesn't have a lot of the benefits of a Pixel device like the camera, night sight, portrait mode and the Titan M chip but I can't help but feel the Pixel 3a is a little overpriced for the raw specifications. For $300-$350 I think it would be a fantastic phone. I'm still debating whether or not to pick one up as my next phone but I can't make up my mind on it.

Not exactly. That usually only happens with curved edges which you don’t see anymore because of that reason

The camera has always been the low point of Xiaomi devices up until recently. The camera on the A2 is actually pretty good in good lighting but absolutely awful in low light. It seems to be the API they're using and the post processing. My old Redmi Note 4x's camera was very poor out of the box but after rooting, changing the camera API and flashing a port of the pixel camera app it improved dramatically. It was genuinely like an entirely different camera.

We talked about this a while back (like a week), just something that I noticed. Colleague has an S9+, needed his phone for Samsung OS translation to my language, he had it downscaled to 2xx0x1080 (not sure what the S9+ downscaled is). You can immediately notice the difference, everything is so, so blurred. One might only notice it definitely if they used a higher res screen, but most people should notice it. More so since it's OLED so basically 2/3 pixels. My recommendation, go and test it on a big enough screen, I'll bet you a billion internet points you'll notice it immediately. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.
