What Linux Distro should I use?

I'm fairly new to Linux, and was wondering if there is a distro that is kind of like Windows 10 and will run most games with windows 10 compatability. (Since I don't know much about how to select and OS, just ask me questions if there was something that I should specify.)

Most major distributions will run games about as well as the others and the compatibility with Windows games depends more on wine and/or dxvk than on the distro. What games specifically are you interested in running? Usually you can find out if a game will work well on Linux by searching for "<game> Linux".

That would entirely depend on what aspects of Windows 10 you're referring to, but generally speaking Linux is not some sort of free Windows and expecting it to work exactly like Windows is setting yourself up for disappointment.

That would entirely depend on what aspects of Windows 10 you're referring to, but generally speaking Linux is not some sort of free Windows and expecting it to work exactly like Windows is setting yourself up for disappointment.

OK, noted. I'm running games like Kerbal Space Program, Stormworks: Build and Rescue, and a little bit of Rainbow 6 Siege.

While I agree with Sauron that it's not the same, most Distros these days are pretty straightforward to use.  Terminal requirements are pretty low, and the software store apps are pretty good.

As long as Steam/wine/dxvk will run the games you want you will probably be ok there.

Get a cheap HDD/SSD and try one.  No risk.

 

EDIT- Most Popular Distros are pretty Straightforward.  Mint, Ubuntu, ETC.  Maybe stay away from Arch...

For the one that works/looks most like windows I'd get Linux Mint, but be warned that you'll probably have lower fps and maybe games that don't work natively on linux at all (you'll need to install additional programs to get these running)

KSP has a native Linux port, unfortunately rainbow 6 siege doesn't work very well with wine and I don't know about stormworks (though from what I read about the game it probably works fine with steam proton).

Your best option is to run Windows 10. I fail to understand why you want to have a "Windows that is not Windows" which requires an additional emulation layer for most things which you want to run on it anyway.

Now that I've heard it a few times, I'm fine with the fact that it won't emulate Windows. I just really want it to run most of my games and be pretty easy to use.

I'm hoping to have Linux for my new build to help with the cost, and because I have heard many good things about it and want to try it.

A new build will probably come with a Windows license anyway...

 

Linux is horrible in my opinion. The community is childish, the software quality is awful, the kernel is insecure and not really stable. Windows surpasses it in almost every way.

There are other free operating systems like FreeBSD which are less bad but still free - but for me (personally), they still wouldn't be worth the effort if I was in your place.

Do you really think the Linux kernel is insecure and not stable? If that was true, why would almost all servers run Linux and not Windows? Even Microsoft has some Linux servers.

And what software's have awful quality? There is a lot of good software for Linux. And IMO calling the community childish is childish.

 

I've personally used Xubuntu since 2008.

I don't know much about music as I've never used anything else than Audacity, but I know there is a few programs for music production.

For pictures there is GIMP which in my opinions is good but if you need you can always run Photoshop with Wine. And for videos there is for example Kdenlive, Cinelerra or even DaVinci Resolve.

Currently, OpenBSD, FreeBSD and Solaris (illumos). I am still considering to phase out the FreeBSD servers as it can be rather annoying to maintain them unless I stick with the default compiler parameters.

GIMP is far from being nearly as awesome as Windows/macOS picture editing applications, both regarding its usability and its features. It might be enough for "most people", but it still lags behind. Yes, I could simulate Windows - but why would I run Linux then anyway?

 

Raw photo editors like Darktable are available though.

None of those are even close to their Windows/macOS equivalents. I admit that Kdenlive is adequate though.

Some people doesn't like Windows or have some other reason not to use it, but some of them still want to use some Windows programs.

Then they want to use Windows. I know that many people wrongly assume that Windows was a bad thing to use. Using Windows applications is not really better on any other OS.
